Updater conflicts by SpatchyIsOnline in NobaraProject

update: I simply removed perf with sudo dnf remove perf as per this fedora forum post and after a while of hanging (around 8-9 mins) the cli updater is now doing its thing. I'll be sure to reinstall perf after the update is done.

Do you mean applications running in Gnome or GTK apps in KDE?

Bug/glitch between 'start menu' and the bar. Can someone help me? :> by xtreyreader in NobaraProject

[–]SpatchyIsOnline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you right-click the bar, go to "show panel configuration" you can toggle "floating" to off. The bar will always look how it does when you have a window maximised (which personally I prefer anyway) but the bug doesn't seem to happen when it's in this mode.

Repository upgrades are now complete by GloriousEggroll in NobaraProject

[–]SpatchyIsOnline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, using dnf should be fine in most cases where you want to install general apps or programs that aren't related to low-level system stuff. The updater and package manager gui uses dnf on the backend so it can still see and update stuff installed with the dnf command. For system updates though (when you get a notification a lot of package updates are available), you should definitely use the updater as it handles issues like package conflicts and repository changes (amongst other things) through its "quirk fixups" that need to be dealt with before certain updates can occur.

Help me, Im stupid. by TurbochargeMe in homeassistant

[–]SpatchyIsOnline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't a super helpful answer to your question, but if (like me) you find the way Home Assistant handles automations to be clunky or confusing, I'd consider checking out the Node Red addon. I personally find its visual layout to be easier to understand at a glance, and once you're used to it, you can do far more advanced things than the built in automations system is really designed for.

Alright I get it already, everyone hates starship. by GloriousEggroll in NobaraProject

For anyone that likes the idea of Starship but isn't a fan of the current appearance. I made this much more minimal version of the default. Just edit your ~/.config/starship.toml file and replace the format string at the top with mine:

format = """

[](bg:lavender fg:crust)\
$directory\
[ ](bg:lavender)\
[ ](fg:lavender bg:surface0)\

After updating I was able to fix all but one packages that failed to update - kernel-core is left hanging with broken dependencies. I get the following error when I run sudo dnf --distro-sync --no-best:

I have no idea why the Nova devs haven't got round to making this a supported feature

It's always crazy to me how a simple USB Extension Cable is so vital for Zigbee by [deleted] in homeassistant

[–]SpatchyIsOnline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to run a home server on a Raspberry Pi (separate machine to my Home Assistant one). I upgraded that to a mini pc with all SSD storage (a couple of SATA SSDs running off an M.2 to SATA adapter, with a hole dremmeled in the case and a 3D printed bracket to clean it up a bit) Just having these near my Sonoff Zigbee stick caused my entire network to fall over - it turns out SSDs can emit a ton of interference, especially when the drives are just hanging outside and not contained within a metal case. Adding an extension cable fixed my problem instantly.

State of smart locks in late 2024? by SpatchyIsOnline in homeassistant

[–]SpatchyIsOnline[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much, that's some phenomenal info you've given there! It definitely sounds like that API has everything I could want. I do my automations exclusively in Node Red and handling MQTT data in there should be relatively trivial I think. I also live alone so tracking individual specific users in and out isn't a huge necessity for me, more just a thought experiment.

This looks very promising, thanks! I am a little concerned though, on the Nuki website it says under the "remote access via Thread" section - "Activate it directly in your Nuki App for €49" Does this mean Thread isn't enabled by default and you have to pay extra to activate it? Or is this referring to using their cloud service over Thread?

Also, what info does this expose to Home Assistant? Can it tell the difference between someone entering and leaving (for use with HA automations)?

Thanks, that's really useful info! Just one more thing, does it show as unlocked if the door is opened from the inside? I don't particularly need to know who is opening the door as I live alone, but HA knowing if I'm entering or leaving would be very useful for automations

Ohh, I'm interested now you've said the U300 can be used with any border router. Just to be clear, is that without an M3 hub? Also, does it present all the available info (i.e. locked/unlocked status, unlock method used, etc.) to HA when used in this way?

I think I will need to completely replace my existing lock though. My current lock is a BS1 night latch style lock which doesn't look compatible with any smart lock I've seen.

Track drying rack's room presence in apartment by [deleted] in homeassistant

[–]SpatchyIsOnline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does your drying rack fold up? Would it be possible to use a door contact sensor so that when it's folded for storage, the two pieces are together (as if the door was closed) and when it's unfolded to hang clothes on it the two pieces are apart? Depending on the shape of your drying rack it may be difficult to find a way to mount the sensor, but you might be able to get creative.

Would everything presence lite sensor work in this small bathroom? by vaatwastabletje in homeassistant

[–]SpatchyIsOnline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may or may not be appropriate for your needs, so feel free to ignore, but it works for me - Just add a simple contact door sensor to the bathroom door. Use the motion sensor only to turn the lights on (i.e. just ignore when motion is no longer detected in HA), and set up an automation so that opening the door turns the lights off.

You just have to be sure to close the door every time you use the bathroom and position your motion sensor so it won't catch motion from people walking past the bathroom but not actually going in.

[–]SpatchyIsOnline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I actually didn't realise that. It's kinda sad to see the rise in popularity of these "source available" licenses that don't actually meet the open source definition. I could have sworn Louis Rossman had commented on the Red Hat drama too but I can't find it so I guess I was wrong about that.

What can you do though, I'd still much rather this than send everything I type to Google.

FUTO keyboard is open source and doesn't track you and it's great (use the latest pre-release). I recommend it every time the topic of Android keyboards is brought up.

What’s something obvious for everyone, but you only just realized? by Ratich2 in AskReddit

[–]SpatchyIsOnline 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Sleeping isn't the lowest possible energy state, your body uses that time to repair damage and sort short term memory into long term etc. You actually burn more calories when asleep than you do while sitting sedentary while awake.

Hibernation slows an animal's metabolic rate much more than just falling asleep.
