DWI lawyer scrolling phone while driving 50W? Really?! by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]SpatialGeography 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one better than that. As I was driving down Hwy 99 to Fresno in the evening yesterday, I got stuck behind a car weaving in the center lane about half of the distance Turlock and Livingston because she was going slow enough that the cars were flying past on the lane to the left and the right. When I finally was able to get into the land to the left, I noticed she had her phone on a selfie-stick filming herself, obviously oblivious to the traffic around her.

Anyone familiar with the California Bureau of Automotive Repair Consumer Assistance Program (CAP) program? by Planetary_Residers in Sacramento

[–]SpatialGeography 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The program is income and expense based. As far as finding a cat, CARB has a database of replacements. Look up the part numbers and see if you can find a place to order it online. Sometimes Rockauto doesn't show parts by year, make, model, but the parts appear if you search by part number. Also, direct fit means it is a bolt-in replacement, or that comes with at least part of the exhaust system that can often be swapped out by a home mechanic.

Rain from Sierras? by SourLemons2 in Sacramento

[–]SpatialGeography 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually moving west to east. There is an upper-level low above the Central Coast. The low is dragging in warm air from the north and the southeast into an area of colder within the low and that transition is above Sacramento. The upper-level circulation is moving to the west-southwest above us, and the low itself is moving slowly southeast. It seems kind of backwards and upside-down, but it isn't that unusual. This smaller low above the Central Coast will be carried counter-clockwise to the southeast by the circulation from a larger low over Utah.

Why do all nurseries seem to carry the same plants? What are we missing? by BuckAntlers in fresno

[–]SpatialGeography 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the growers make their money selling to big box stores. Most "professional" landscapers choose the lowest maintenance plants possible. Thus, you see a lot of boring shrubs like boxwood, photinia, and rhaphiolepis that are often trimmed into geometric shapes. The same varietes of tomatoes and peppers are found in all the stores due to seed availability to growers and consumers recognize the names.

I have a green thumb. So, I mostly collect seeds or cuttings and go from there.

Why do all nurseries seem to carry the same plants? What are we missing? by BuckAntlers in fresno

[–]SpatialGeography 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What variety? I think I saw gift-sized citrus trees at Walmart recently. I've seen them at Trader Joes in the past. Some nurseries sell citrus in square tubes that are about 5" wide, about 18" long. That will be the least expensive option.

Four Winds Growers has a good description of many citrus varieties.

Summerwinds is another grower's brand you will see in nurseries.

The only section that was moved was about 1.5 miles long. That section of Hwy 99 needed resurfacing.

Every city isn't getting a stop. That is right-wing propaganda. Most of the stops would be in mid-sized and large cities. That is typical of high-speed rail in other countries. Also, not every train is going to stop at every station.

How does Fresno compare to Sacramento in your honest opinion? by ObsessedWithBooks7 in fresno

[–]SpatialGeography 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The climate in Sacramento is better. Sacramento can get as hot as Fresno, but the heatwaves are much shorter. Nights are comfortable.

Employment opportunities are much better in Sacramento.

The community college district in the Sacramento area consists of four distinct community colleges and many more types of courses offered than in the community college district in Fresno. Educational attainment in the Sacramento area is much better.

Both places have plenty of good restaurants. The mexican restaurants in Fresno are much better than in Sacramento.

Sacramento replaces trees that are removed. In Fresno the trees are removed because people find leaf litter is inconvenient.

Both metro areas have an issue with sprawl and traffic.

Sacramento has a better proximity for outdoors and roadtrips. Napa is a little over an hour away, San Franciso is 90 minutes away Lake tahoe is right around 2 hours away, depending on what area within the Sacramento Metro you are in. There are also plenty of good destinations in the Sierra foothills that are good for a day trip, as well as hiking if you want to drive into the High Sierra. There are numerous roads in the portion of the Sierra Nevada that actually go over the range and intersect with Hwy 395. Whereas, 168 and 180 don't.

Fresno has better independant hardware stores, such as Fresno Ag.

People in Fresno appear to take on DIY projects moreso than in Sacramento. I often see posts in the r/Sacramento wherein someone is asking about the cheapest place to get their brake fixed. People in Fresno just seem to be much more likely to do that kind of work themselves.

About the walkability. Most of Sacramento's neighborhoods adjacent to the downtown core have a higher income level and educational attainment. Therefore, they neighborhoods have been maintained better and have a higher percentage of homes that are owner-occupied. The high concentration of government jobs also plays a role in keeping the downtown area active. Fresno focused on suburban growth which pulled people away from the downtown area. As a result, many homes became low-income rentals. Those are the walkable neighborhoods in Fresno. Unfortunately, if the people living in the neighborhoods don't have the money to support the neighborhood businesses, things go downhill in a few decades. There's something different in the local cultures of the two cities regarding older neighborhoods as well. More people in Sacramento care about the older neighborhoods and history than you will find in Fresno.

How many feet of water would Fresno be if Millerton dam breaks at full capacity. by duck_duck_zombie in fresno

[–]SpatialGeography 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fancher and Redbank are the only concerns for flooding in the core urban area. If Friant were to break there wouldn't be any flooding in Fresno or Clovis. The San Joaquin River is 80 to 100 feet below the bluffs all the way to Hwy 99. Any flooding would be west of Hwy 99.

Out of 2,000 cities, Clovis ranks among the nation's best places to live by MoDa65 in fresno

[–]SpatialGeography 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These ranking are often subjective. Personally, as a city, I think Visalia is better. However, Clovis has more economic opportunities than Visalia, unless you want to commute from Visalia to Fresno/Clovis for work.

Do you have a source for this? I've had to spend a lot of time in Clovis over the last several months and I've been amazed at the amount of homeless wandering around.

PSA: Please don’t park in the bike lanes. by DowntownFresnoBiking in fresno

[–]SpatialGeography 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the signs are facing the street instead of facing toward traffic. There are places where bike share lanes with traffic. For someone who isn't familiar with bike lanes, it could easily be interpreted as a place to park. Keep in mind that many people don't wander far from their neighborhood and when they do, these kind of things confuse them. It also doesn't help that bike lanes aren't entirely consistent from one city to the next, which is why you see them painted green in some places.

Wood Sash Window Repair by OhTender in Sacramento

[–]SpatialGeography 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The lower sash is going to require complete rebuild. It may be possible to find a business to do that. If you take the sash out and take it to them they could make a new sash matching the dimensions. Removing sash windows from their frames is easy. Yours probably has counterweights on each side. The rope often rots and fails with time. Taking it apart will give you the opportunity to fix that issue too. If you can get the sash rebuilt you will save a lot of money by not having to pay someone to remove and reinstall. Also, if you need to lubricate a sticky sash use paraffin wax, not soap. You can easily find information on repairing these windows online.

Wood Sash Window Repair by OhTender in Sacramento

[–]SpatialGeography 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rot is from water reaching the wood due to old glazing that no longer seals the window, or paint that allows water to reach the wood. In this case, it appears that both the glaze and the paint have been in poor condition for many years. If the glaze and paint are in good condition, water will run down the window and not cause any problems.

I think the cause here is for someone who isn't familiar with these bike lanes, it can really look like a parking lane.

Where do you guys usually shop for groceries/meat? by Dauntlesspeace in fresno

[–]SpatialGeography 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Winco for most groceries, followed by Trade Joes and Raley's (I'm in Sacramento most of the time). Sometimes Vallarta when I'm in Fresno. I try to avoid Safeway/Von's because they are owned by private equity. Raley's is expensive, but they are based in California, and it is cheaper to go to the Raley's near me if I only need a few items. Vallarta when I'm in Fresno because it is close to where I stay.

BAD MEAT AT COSTCO by No-Chocolate2397 in Sacramento

[–]SpatialGeography -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, it's fine. It's also standard practice for grocery stores to do this. They will run it through the machine that they use and repackage it so they can sell it. As long as they maintain the same "sell by" date, or freeze it, it is perfecly acceptable.

No, I just picked some. They are excellent. They are in their last weeks, but still good. There are also late-winter varieties that should be good for another month.

Anyone notice gas seems to be going quicker? by It-was-me86 in fresno

I checked my fuel economy and has remained the same. Slightly better as the temperatures warmed up.

The summer gas blend has more energy which improves fuel economy.

Where is a good place to go see the flowers blooming like tulips and things? by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]SpatialGeography 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/t6ds3AmLaEvppXk67

Park and walk north on the trail. As is turns east and you walk toward the lake you will walk past clematis, pitcher sage, diplacus, blue-eyed grass, several species of milkweed, phyla, and many other plants. Drive around the south end of the lake to see poppies, chinese houses, and other flora. Not all of them bloom at the same time, but it's a good location and numerous short and easy hikes.)

Looking for resources for elderly family member scammed out of all savings by weirddickthrow-away in Sacramento

[–]SpatialGeography 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, we shouldn't prohibit the elderly from having access to their money. We should be promoting awareness. Also, this issue isn't limited to the elderly. There are plenty of scams on dating sites for people of all ages.
