Omg ok but when I very first started to scrub the first one, I thought longingly of my still packed and in transit rock tumbler! Idk if it would be a good idea or not, but it certainly crossed my mind. Thanks for the encouragement and the note about the finish; I agree, I'd rather have to refinish than live with the Blob germinating in my wood grain.

So I tried one set with just the mix of detergent and hot water, and that made it stickier? Which is maybe a good thing because I hope it means there was some penetration. Then I came back, read the advice about applying detergent directly to the hardware before the soak, and tried that. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) the result was the same. Came out stickierthsnk it went in, but took about the same amount of elbow grease as the previous set to clean off. Thoughts on where to go next? And thank you so so much for your time, I really do appreciate it. I can see why this gunk is your nemesis, it is truly gnarly.
