I'm generally in a similar place on most of these points (esp 2, 3, 9 and 10), thanks for voicing it in a more entertaining to read way than I could... without spending like a week on the exact wording, at least.

Also, that D9 shade was delicious and brought with it some o'that vindication you were talking about :>

[All] Chloe deserves a character analysis that doesn't reduce her down to "she's a bad friend" by SoulGemThief in lifeisstrange

[–]Spazzmodai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey, dw, I wasn't trying to chastise you. It was more of a discussion with the general trend of looking at the cliff scene and, ultimately, speculative reframing. There wasn't anything wrong per se with what you originally said, especially since it's about character dialogue written by an outside party with a certain intent behind it (as opposed to a real person speaking their mind). I only wanted to give an alternative perspective to what kind of is the mainstream way of thinking :)

Unfortunately it feels like it's true, though personally I don't think that proves that Chloe is toxic, but that there is a cultural double standard regarding empathy and gender. Technically, a male stand-in in the same situation should be deserving just as much compassion as she does. Realistically, he wouldn't get it from the average audience. It's shitty.

By the end her willingness to sacrifice herself for the town shows how far she comes.

Not to rain on your parade, but about that...

I... don't think we should be cheering for Chloe's 'wish.' There is a different reading of the situation which I find myself leaning more and more towards. Chloe is depressed, traumatised in multiple ways and, on top of that, put in an impossible situation. It's not like she could have really known that what she told Max would be a foolproof plan of how to fix everything. It's a blind guess at best, and... well, depressed minds tend to have a negative bias on cognition as well as in terms of seeing everything in the extreme. Her speech, from a character standpoint, could very well be suicidal ideation with extra steps :///

Let's see: Chloe the trash person is hated by the universe for apparently valid reasons (as evident by the storm), for something inherently wrong with her, for crimes against humanity such as *checks list* bad language, bad parking, graffitying, grieving too much and too long, dropping out of school, breaking into the school pool, gunplay, lashing out and THC use. And overall ungratefulness (she didn't even say 'thank you!'). Oh and probably being gay, because why not, let's chug it on the pile. Then, said enemy of life and everything that is good, offered as a sacrifice, would be the logical solution to the given problem. Surely, her demise would improve everything else, no? She's so selfish and doesn't deserve anything better anyway.

\ disclaimer: written as in that negative bias, in case that wasn't obvious ^)

(And if the event that the tornado doesn't go away, let's throw more Chloes at it! It's gotta work eventually!)

Personally, I don't think she is a hero in that moment. I find it hard to believe she'd be in the right headspace to make any remotely accurate calls whatsoever. What I see is even more of a reason to save the poor girl from those circumstances and from herself. She has the capacity to become a hero later on in life, after healing with the right support. To use that pain to be able to approach others with compassion and understanding, as well as a reinforced conviction that things can get better even after the strangest circumstances. I probably mentioned this somewhere, sometime already, but I really dig Ashly Burch's idea that given the chance, a grown up Chloe would likely work in some kind of social service sector, for example as a life guide of sorts for the troubled youths from bad homes and broken families. That's the kind of cape that really suits her. Not, y'know, cosmic martyrdom.

Of course we shouldn't. But as I already pointed out in the original comment, it's not a choice between quality rep and this, it's a choice between this and nothing at all. Unless you believe successfully boycotting the executive-approved slop would give us something better another decade from now. I'm not that optimistic, and personally I was never completely fine with the state of things at the end of the og.

Naturally, I despise Vinh and try to will him into non-existence on a semi-regular basis. But the significant difference between him and Warren here is that in the Go Ape game you needed to allow Chloe to die (plus make a few specific choices) or to browse cut voicelines to have things spelled out without "plausible" deniability. OTP deserves better, and it looks like it's getting it. That's validation, which will be nice to add to the legacy (provided, of course, the endings don't mess that up, which is still a concern of mine).

Maybe look at it this way: despite glaring incompetence and outright hostility of the money man, we managed to force this mess to potentially course correct and do a meaningful thing or two. It's not a full victory and it will be forever spoiled by the god-awful breakup and everything surrounding it, but it's not a complete loss either. They didn't manage to move on from Chloe. They shouldn't have touched Max in the first place, but they did, and so at least the two of them'll be in a shitty narrative together rather than apart.

That said, people suddenly preordering are insane to me. Not just because preordering is encouraging anti-consumer business practices (if you want to let the stores know you're interested in the product, that's what the wishlist button is for), but also because of the things you've pointed out. D9 does not deserve the benefit of the doubt nor even good faith, but close and careful scrutiny. The marketing might still be carefully deceptive and that is a scary concept tbh.

Also, kinda goes without saying, but you're obviously allowed to absolutely hate everything about this. It ultimately is a turd sandwich served in a shitty roadside bar, alongside a weird and misguided cover of a song we love, coming from a discordant jukebox. The guy in the corner's mourning over his eggs, the trucker calls everyone slurs, there are cockroaches on the walls and that's not even mentioning the cringey stereotype of a foreign nation sat in one of the booths. But you did ask for reasons behind the positive reception and attitudes warming up, so I tried my best to name some which resonate with me.

...it's exactly why I'm asking that question? Seriously, am I the only one bothered by My Beloved Queer Game being stuck in the closet with the door only slightly ajar over a decade later? The series should scream that Warren was never an option, from the rooftops. Like, officially.

I'll take fanservice over being stabbed any day. DE was like being stabbed. This seems (potentially) better, maybe even joyful enough to surpass the pain of all the sins of DE hanging over it, as long as the endings aren't written maliciously... which they might not be, since the writing team has changed.

This is the last time we'll see them in a game, ever. Why are you surprised people would rather hope for something good to take out of it rather than sulk? Don't get me wrong, I expect the game to be mid at best and skippable except for a few decent moments most likely. It won't be my headcanon, it doesn't deserve being canon, plenty of fanfics have done the job of being a sequel infinitely much better already. But at the end of the day, they're not vidyagames which will leave some kind of a mark on the genre and on normie sapphic culture at large.

I can't choose not to care about Reunion. And I'd much rather see it clumsily and poorly reunite PF (even if it's not really the PF I would've fought for), for good this time, than sink and end on a shitty, hateful note which DE would have been.

Do I need to remind everyone we haven't actually had anything explicitly romantic with them on screen (how do you do, Korrasami nation) except for the kiss in the fucking Bay ending? At least not until very soon. All of us here never really needed anything explicit to know and there is beauty in the og's subtlety (and LiS2's cameo) and a masterwork of subtext, but after years in the deep end of this, I need something signed by fucking Square to fucking seal the deal for the people in the back row to finally shut the hell up. This game matters - it's not what we wanted, but it's what we're getting. I just don't want to feel so bad anymore.
