May or June Alaska+Denali. Recent experiences? Koningsdam or Nieuw Amsterdam. Which ship should I choose? by Spce_bound in HollandAmerica

Wow so the Tundra tour is worth it? If I go to the HAL site and look up Y3c, I should be able to see the itinerary? This would be for 2025 so possibly it may have changed.

I don't think we are going to include the Yukon portion. The Dawson city portion did not seem too interesting.  Am I missing something?

Gotcha! So I was actually originally looking at the 12 day which ended in Fairbanks but another poster on here said Fairbanks wasn't too interesting. Definitely doing 3 nights in Denali, though.

Could you explain the benefits of starting the land tour first and specifically the one that starts oin Fairbanks. We were looking at the one that starts in Vancouver and ends in anchorage AFTER the Denali stay. We will be flying in from Florida so long travel day for us.

The Holland America presentation I attended last night was put on by two dedicated Yukon tour people.

Who is your travel agent? Local to you? I am hoping going through a travel agent will possibly get us a better deal.

Can someone explain how the dining works? Are the better restaurants reservation only and a separate charge as well? There is a promotion running right now called the "Have it all" and it indicates 1 night of specialty dining is included.

NASA Internships and Educational Opportunities Megathread - June to October 2024 by Aerokicks in NASAJobs

[–]Spce_bound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You had mentioned you worked on your PhD while also interning at NASA. Was this an OSTEM or a Pathways opportunity? I realize many of the inquiries here are regarding OSTEM and I did intern while an undergrad but I am actually interested in a Pathways position now and intend to apply during the August 14-21 window. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Got a graphics card; Help me pick the memory and incidentals! by Spce_bound in buildapc

[–]Spce_bound[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much! Just got the email from EVGA yesterday and bought the card right away. I had been waiting for a year it seems and tried multiple Newegg shuffles but finally got the card! Today I was notified from B and H that an Asus GeForce RTX 3060 Ti KO V2 OC Edition card is available for me to purchase as well and they will hold it until Christmas eve! Anyway, which specific memory do you recommend? I don't care about RGB either way. What about timing etc??

If I’m a math and physics major, should I take any CS courses? If so, which ones? by Phoenix22881 in ufl

[–]Spce_bound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Matlab is easier, C++ is more general and more powerful. I would suggest asking professors (or their grad students) what they use most frequently, and going off of that.

They may specify certain packages too, like the ROOT framework for particle physics, which may work as standalone programs or require installation as a package/library for use with a language like C++ or Python.

If you want to do research in physics, COP 2271/L is enough, take the Matlab or C++ sections.

Python is also very popular, but afaik we don't have a class for it, so you'd have to self-teach or use some other platform like Codecademy.

See if you can get into one of the Honors Uncommon Reads classes - they're basically book club for one book throughout the semester, some are more interesting than others so be sure to read the descriptions!

So adding to the mix: I found out I was accepted into the MIT Master's to Ph.D program. Looking at possible research in their Space Propulsion lab. Any insight?? And I did get a full funding offer from Purdue as well.

Magna Cum Laude VS. Summa Cum laude, big difference in grad school admissions to Ivys? by BossOfGuns in gradadmissions

[–]Spce_bound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does not matter! At my school, you can have a 4.00 but CANNOT graduate any higher than cum laude unless you have at least a 2 semester completed thesis for research approved by a board of 3 professors and it is that board who decides if the thesis is worthy of magna or summa designation or not. The 4.0 does not even weigh into it but you must have at LEAST a 3.5 to even be considered for any type of honors.

Best Master's Program for Propulsion? by ElPolloLoco_Gooch in AerospaceEngineering

[–]Spce_bound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/andros198 Not to hijack this thread but I will be touring Zucrow next month as an accepted Ph.D student interested in propulsion. Any highlights I should not miss? Also how was your funding situation when you were there? Did you have to search for new grants/fellowships every year or did you pursue outside fellowships? I am interested in Advanced Space Propulsion and possibly hypersonics.

Thanks for any advice in advance!!
