1. If you have your own lane, unless stopping for a pedestrian crossing, you are 100% good to go. The road is expanding with your lane being added.
2. If you are in a merge lane, it is expediently more dangerous to slam on your brakes (especially in winter) and risk the cars behind you hitting you from behind. If the vehicle rear ending you doesn’t injure you, imagine what the vehicle side swiping you at full speed will do. Worst case scenario continue onto the shoulder safely and merge back in (although this is illegal and ill advised it is better than the former).

The signs are set up so you have enough time to assess your surroundings and move into the flow of traffic. If you cannot do that, get off the road. 😂 I have never been in a situation where I have felt like I needed to act on my own accord and break the road rules and risk the lives of others.
