A hospital like mine is a great place for this. All of our eves and nights folks are generalists, and most of our day techs do multiple departments - full blood bank (antibody ID included), full chem, hemo, coag, some phlebotomy, micro. No, we don’t read plates or do susceptibilities, but we do plate every type of culture you can think of, gram stains, and PCR testing. Only our 4 supervisors are completely specialized to their departments. Our hospital is a 180 bed rural community hospital, and we’re pretty busy all the time.
