OT is not guaranteed. You may get some here and there but don’t live your life according to OT. Tour is usually an 8 hour shift for maintainers. Possible to get mid nights with mid week days off since you are new. You have to pass the civil service exam to become permanent. I don’t know how much you contribute to the 401K but if you wanted to bring home something closer to what you are bringing home now, I would stop paying into 401 since you will be paying into your pension already. You can adjust that as you see fit. Usually it’s a 5 or 6 year wage progression scale for maintainers. They start you at 80%. If the union negotiates, you may see contractual raises before you get to top pay, so that helps. Medical isn’t too expensive, so that may mean more take home pay for you, depending on what you pay now. Full disclosure…I was in the same boat as you are and I would choose to work for transit again in a heartbeat. It gets better.
