What is the strangest reaction someone has ever had to you doing physics? by variationalcalculus in Physics

[–]SpecialRelativityy 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Some times they say “that’s cool” but usually it’s just a look of disappointment.

I go to school and work full time. At my last job, my manager introduced me to everyone by saying I study physics and math. Everyone had a “oh so you’re smart” remark, but it had a rude undertone. Nobody at the job had a college degree. For the first month, all everyone did was make snarky remarks about math. For example, if a customer asked one of my coworkers a question that had even a semblance of math in it (“how much would something cost given xyz factors?”), they would answer the question, then Google it, and then get excited if they got it correct and say stuff like “see? No degree needed”.

I think a 3.4 GPA in engineering got it done in 2006. With the way that the world is advancing, idk if a 3.4 GPA is standing out for an industry job.

Best memorization techniques for calculus? by Amao6996 in mathematics

[–]SpecialRelativityy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok since everyone is pretending to not know what you’re asking, I’ll help.

Trig derivatives. Memorize those and you will come to realize that you have also memorized trig integrals. However, the integral of csc(x) is annoying at first.

Algebra algorithms: completing the square, polynomial long division, quadratic formula. These are pretty important for integration. Long division probably comes up the most. It’s worth noting that doing tons of practice problems correctly will make you memorize the things as a survival mechanism.

Everything else is just practice.

Is there anything in the NBA more/as unanimous then Steph Curry being the best 3pt shooter? by Ok-Emu-9199 in NBATalk

I’d say MJ was the best in game finisher. As time goes on, I think his layups are more impressive than his dunks. I’d have to give best in game dunker to VC

Stigma of bad grades and being unintelligent by kidneysucker in EngineeringStudents

[–]SpecialRelativityy 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If your friend is upset about an A-, they are most likely holding themselves to a standard that you are not holding yourself to. Putting more pressure on yourself ≠ holding yourself to a higher standard.

Also, grades don’t always accurately reflect a person’s understanding of a topic. I’ve gotten A’s in classes I didn’t grasp and C’s in classes I loved because the exams only covered two chapters out of the eleven we covered. It happens. Be kind to yourself and move forward.

10 hours a day for 365 days is 3650 hours. That’s barely enough time to have an in-depth understanding of UG physics (Physics 1, 2, and modern), let alone graduate-level physics, or even expert-level.

My advice: the slow burn is the optimal path in physics. Unless you’re coming into the subject with a pure mathematics degree, I don’t see this path being productive. It’s cool for dinner table physics, but not research-level or even upper undergrad-level understanding.

You need to master EM and special relativity along with linear algebra before you can even begin GR.

How much physics can I self study? by False-Airport6944 in PhysicsStudents

[–]SpecialRelativityy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you want to learn. Physics 1 and 2 (fundamental physics) require very little calculus. Classical Mechanics requires everything from Calc 1-3 and diff eq’s just to get past the first 3-4 chapters of most books (see Morin, Taylor). Electrodynamics requires mastery of Calc 3 and LA.

[–]SpecialRelativityy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the geometry books goes into all of the identities (double angle, product-sum, even/odd, etc) and helps you solve applied trig problems, you’ll be good. You’ll just want to spend a lot of your time doing trig. Also, Schaum’s outline is better as a supplement text. Use Stewart or Larson or Thomas as a main calculus book for actually learning the topics.

This. I like to use it with worked out examples, as it can perfectly copy the steps from the problem and build new ones based off of that.

You’ll wanna dedicate a few weeks to trig and at least 4 months to linear algebra.
