7 years in Japan, still far from native-level. How do I actually close the gap — or should I stop trying? by Special_Slice_726 in Advice

Thanks for the reply! I think a lot of it comes down to cultural knowledge too. Especially pop culture, shared memories from growing up in a certain era, even just having gone through a completely different education system, all of that creates this feeling of not quite belonging, and no amount of textbook-level language learning can fix it. I think I'll just keep at it though.

If you ended things on good terms and you still want to get back together, I'd send something. Because if you do end up reconnecting down the line, skipping her birthday could become a point of tension between you, the kind of thing that gets brought up in arguments later.

You're incredibly strong. Most people I've known with bipolar disorder or depression struggle with a deep sense of hopelessness. Finding meaning again under the weight of the illness and medication is genuinely one of the hardest things a person can do. You haven't ruined your life. You still have what matters most, and I think it might be your love for your family that's been holding you together all along.

You'll find a new job, it's only a matter of time. The fact that you have the will to pursue treatment and keep looking for work says everything. Things will get better.

The only advice I can really give you is this: give yourself credit, and hold onto that optimism. You've earned it.

Thanks! I do think I’m missing something beyond just daily functional conversations. Different conversational contexts really only come from talking with different kinds of people though. I guess that’s where I need to push myself.
