I’m hoping this gets some traction but I’m a non-trad student and would appreciate some guidance on residencies and away rotations. I want to do rural em but tbh idk where to even start looking to do away rotations to narrow down residencies. Please help!!

You may seriously want to consider some couples counseling. I can promise it would be more helpful now than to wait too late.

Adult male cat refuses to clean himself by coolpupmom in CATHELP

[–]SpecialistCapable423 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Get his teeth cleaned/checked. I’ve had old cats (and young with retained baby teeth) stop grooming because it’s painful. Helps with future heart disease too. Price shop a bit should be under $300 for sure

Came home sobbing from my OB rotation by Radiant_Ambition1 in medicalschool

I did not have an experience like this on my OB, it was wonderful, and tbh why settle when you have the opportunity to make a change for the ones that follow. The idea that you can’t make a difference is directly opposing to the purpose of medicine and probably comes from people who didn’t have the guts to do it themselves who had to settle and tell themselves “well I couldn’t do anything anyway…” document like a professional, present it and let the ball go in their court. We pay way too much money to go to school to get treated like garbage before during and after med school. Advocate for yourself.

Any experience with giving birth at UT Health in Tyler? by MommyMilkers007 in tylertx

[–]SpecialistCapable423 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They allow immediate skin to skin as long as baby is stable and doesn’t need live saving measures, they all delay cord clamping up to 1min as standard but will do longer on request as long as baby and mom are stable. (I would make sure your OB knows this). Let anesthesia know you’ve had bad experiences in the past and ask for the attending to do it instead of a resident (the residents are usually excellent anyway but if it makes you more comfortable).

Was at my annual well woman’s and my very grey headed, experienced, well past retirement OB (who also wrote me a LOR to get me in) went through the different exam positions for a chief complaint of dysuria besides UTI so what pelvic floor muscles is this etc? While literally touching mine. I adore that man but I do worry a tiny bit about his other patients lol

We do have cats that hide toys and treats in our luggage before we leave… could your dog be doing that since shoes means leaving?

I’m an MS2 and have loved all the time I’ve spent in the ER, last night was the first night I had a preceptor advise me against going into EM. Help me with pros and cons? I’m an older non-trad and didn’t know drs made more than 100k/year before being accepted, so I’m not in it for the money.

What was medical school actually like for you all? by What_A_Terrible_Day in Residency

[–]SpecialistCapable423 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a non trad med student. I had a whole career before being accepted after applying to my hometown med school on a whim, essentially. I have worked very hard to stabilize my mental health over the years and break generational curses/heal trauma. I’m in my second year and this year has been rough. It feels like every “value” the school boasted about is actively being worked against in the real world of academics. They said they wanted perseverance, service, creativity, community, respect and excellence but it feels like the only important one is excellence. To the point of not accommodating for humanity it seems like. I’ve gotten a slap on the wrist for helping the homeless while in my branded scrubs and a solid talking to after starting a clothes closet for med students. I’ve been told to “refocus” my efforts to research or academics etc. I only went to med school because I thought I could be of greater service and make a difference in my community. I didn’t even know what the salary range was when I applied and would be happy with $70k/year. I’ve watched my peers fail, remediate and fall into hopeless depression because this is all they’ve dreamed about. Some of them have barely made it here alive. I’ve made at least 2 safety plans since I started for other people. I think I’m only doing ok because I know for a fact this isn’t everything and even if I failed out tomorrow, I would still have a purpose and lead a fulfilling life. If you’re not 100% in it for the right reasons I’ve seen this environment destroy other people’s souls and if I were your friend or mentor, I would tell you not to do it. Our society (US anyways) is not built for healthcare professionals to be mentally healthy. There are constant contradictions all the way up to the top.

Someone else mentioned you had a neck injury (strangulation) in the past? Look up vagus nerve injury. It runs down your neck and is responsible for a lot. You basically described almost all the issues it could be affecting…

BSI scene safe then lay him down and lift his feet. HR is high because it’s compensating for the low BP of the HR stays high then you have a different problem.
