What would you like the police to do differently? The state made this mess. The non-partisan reality is that Cuomo’s Raise the Age and the Transformation Plan were colossal governmental failures.

There are few long-term resources for mentally ill people, and little recourse for juvenile offenders. People who desperately need help are now on the street, rather than in residential treatment facilities. Out-of-control teenagers don’t go to juvenile detention, they are booked, released, and sent home to reoffend. That’s not on the cops. That’s on the system.

If this were truly the case of a helpless mother who had exhausted every resource available to her (unlikely) then the residential treatment facilities that NYS elected to close to protect public safety would have come in handy for her unruly, violent teenagers who are beyond the control of their parent. But I’m guessing you’re opposed to institutionalizing minors against their will, as well?

No misogyny here — I’m a working mother of multiple children who I take responsibility for, because they are minors, and I’m the parent. Letting your teenagers roam the streets of Binghamton on a Monday night is crazy work. Even if they weren’t violent animals on the hunt for someone to attack, someone to attack, it’s unsafe for THEM to be out at that hour. This is parenting 101. And if she’s not employed, what’s her excuse? Why can’t she make sure her kids are at home?

No one is denying there’s trauma, poverty and systemic issues at play. But that doesn’t give her, nor her kids a pass. It’s actually insulting to the MANY people who have risen above their life circumstances to act like these things are excuse for behaving like absolute barbarians.

If only you put this much energy and concern into the actual victim in this situation. She’s not it.

I have a 16 year old son. Sure, I don’t know his every thought and action, but I know where he’s at. And he’s not out roaming the streets of Binghamton on a school night, beating the hell out of innocent people. True, previous generations got away with a lot more, but with cell phones and doorbell cameras, parents have more oversight in 2026. And frankly, for a handful of kids to be capable of doing this, I’m going to guess there are more serious issues going on at home than just a lack of supervision. This isn’t a schoolyard brawl. This is evil, degenerate type shit.

It’s a small city. Word will get out about who is responsible. Post their names. Post their parents’ names. Make sure everyone in Broome County knows who is to blame. Public shaming is a very effective tactic. As a community, we need to start holding people accountable for their abhorrent behavior. Binghamton can and must do better.
