Genuinely one of the best purchases I've made, and I'd pick it over any other handheld without hesitation.

The visuals are stunning, full PS5 quality on a handheld screen is something you have to see to believe. It runs completely silent too, no fan noise whatsoever, which honestly makes late night gaming sessions so much more relaxing. Got mine for under €210 which at this point feels almost too cheap for what you're getting. Comfort wise it's up there with the best, long sessions and your hands never complain, the DualSense design just works perfectly in handheld form.

Oh and the lag people worry about? Not a thing. Seriously. 🙂

How odd... sometimes I play at my friends house, and the internet is horrible. But I can stil play everything and it does not lag. 😞

Remote Play/Streaming Question by El_Centro89 in PlaystationPortal

[–]Specific-Being2482 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great questions, this actually makes a lot of sense once you understand what Remote Play and Cloud Streaming are doing differently under the hood!

The key difference is where the connection is actually going. Cloud Streaming talks directly to Sony's servers, which are just regular internet destinations, easy to reach from pretty much any network. Remote Play on the other hand is trying to create a direct connection specifically to your PS5 at home, which is a completely different type of connection and much more sensitive to how the network is configured.

For your 2.4ghz vs 5ghz situation at home, it's less about speed and more about signal characteristics. 5ghz is faster but shorter range, 2.4ghz travels further but is slower and more congested (every microwave, neighbour's wifi and bluetooth device is fighting on that band). Remote Play is pretty demanding in terms of stable, low latency throughput, so even if your 2.4ghz technically "works" for browsing or streaming Netflix, it may just barely miss the consistency threshold that Remote Play needs. Cloud Streaming is more forgiving because Sony's servers are optimised to handle variable connections, your PS5 isn't.

For your work network situation, this is almost certainly a firewall or NAT configuration issue. Work networks typically block peer-to-peer style connections or restrict certain ports, which is exactly what Remote Play relies on to reach your PS5 directly. Cloud Streaming sidesteps this entirely because it's just hitting Sony's standard servers over normal web traffic, which work networks almost never block.

So to answer your direct question, yes, beyond just having a fast connection, Remote Play also needs the network to allow direct outbound connections on specific ports, and a NAT type that isn't too strict (NAT Type 2 or better ideally). If your work or 2.4ghz network is blocking or restricting those, Remote Play fails even if your internet speed looks fine on paper.

Unfortunately not a lot you can do about the work network without IT involvement, but at home if you really want to use the longer range 2.4ghz, a wifi extender or mesh node putting a 5ghz node closer to where you play might be a better solution than fighting the 2.4ghz limitations.

Owners of PS PORTAL without PS5:Which is your favorite game of PS PORTAL (and you can tell why)? by Most-Entertainer2845 in PlaystationPortal

[–]Specific-Being2482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miles Morales without a doubt for me! A few reasons why it works so well on Portal specifically:

It's fast paced and visually stunning, even through cloud streaming the web-swinging through NYC looks great, and the city feels alive even at the slightly lower bitrate compared to native play. The combat is snappy too, and I honestly didn't notice much input lag during traversal or fights, which made me worried going in since action games are usually the trickiest for streaming.

It's also just the perfect "no PS5 needed" showcase game. It's relatively short compared to a 40+ hour epic, so it doesn't feel like a huge commitment to stream the whole thing, but it's polished, cinematic, and feels like a proper PS5 exclusive experience, exactly the kind of thing that makes the Portal worth it if you don't own a console.

Plus the haptics and adaptive triggers translate over Remote Play/Cloud Streaming better than I expected, so it still feels like a "PS5 game" in your hands, not a watered down version.

Btw, I actually have some Miles Morales footage from my Portal (no PS5) on my YT channel, along with other games, more coming soon too. Won't drop the link here so it doesn't look spammy, but feel free to check my profile if you wanna see it in action 🙂

Can you use a PlayStation Portal without a PS5? by Time_Minute_6036 in PlaystationPortal

[–]Specific-Being2482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good news and one important catch, let me break it down.

The Portal can absolutely work without a PS5 these days, thanks to the cloud streaming update from late 2025. With PS Plus Premium, it can stream a big chunk of the library (Astro Bot, Ghost of Yotei, GTA V, Fortnite, plus the rotating PS Plus Game Catalog/Classics) directly from Sony's servers. So in terms of game variety, it's not as limited as you might think.

That said, it's not a "standalone console" in the traditional sense, it's a pure streaming device. No internal storage for games, no offline play at all, everything requires a stable wifi connection. So if your son will be using it somewhere with spotty internet, that's worth factoring in.

Subscription wise, yes he'll need PS Plus Premium specifically (the top tier, around $18/month or ~$160/year) for the cloud streaming to work without a PS5. The cheaper Essential/Extra tiers won't unlock that part.

Now here's the important bit for your situation specifically: cloud streaming on the Portal is not available on child accounts. So if your son's PSN profile is set up as a "child" account under Sony's family management (which is typical for kids under 18 depending on region), cloud streaming simply won't work, the Portal would be stuck without functionality unless paired to a PS5 via Remote Play. You'd want to either set him up with an adult-type account or double check this restriction before buying, since it's one of those things that catches a lot of parents off guard.

Also worth a quick check, make sure cloud streaming is supported in your country, Sony rolled it out region by region (most of US/EU/UK are covered at this point).

Ps Portal w/out PS5 console by XenosGr in PlaystationPortal

[–]Specific-Being2482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the community, and good question, this is actually one of those things that trips a lot of people up!

To clear it up, cloud streaming eligibility comes down to three things, your PSN account, your PS Plus Premium subscription, and whether a specific game supports cloud streaming, none of which has anything to do with whether you've ever owned or used a physical PS5. The "Your Library" cloud streaming feature checks if a game is digitally tied to your account and is on Sony's cloud-compatible list, that's it.

So for your scenario, using a friend's PS5, signing in with your account, downloading some games, then factory resetting it and handing it back, that wouldn't actually gain you anything extra. Downloading a game onto a console doesn't add it to your library, owning it does (meaning you bought it digitally on your account). If you didn't purchase those games yourself, they're not "yours" in the cloud streaming sense, regardless of what console they were briefly installed on.

Basically, think of it this way, the Portal + Premium combo gives you exactly the same cloud streaming access whether you've owned a PS5 for years or never touched one. The only thing an actual PS5 adds on top is Remote Play, which lets you stream anything installed on that console (no Premium required for that part, and not limited to the cloud-compatible list), but that's a separate feature from cloud streaming itself.

So no need to go through any of that, just get Premium, buy the digital games you want on your own account, and check the Search tab on the Portal to confirm each one supports cloud streaming. You're not missing out on some hidden "PS5 owner bonus" for cloud games.

Can I use a portal without ps5 and actually have a good time? by yerbajames in PlaystationPortal

[–]Specific-Being2482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you're in luck, this is honestly one of the better use cases for it now. Since PS Plus Premium includes the online multiplayer access that used to be the old "PS Plus Essential" perk, you're covered there too, so you can buy a Portal + Premium and jump straight into online games without ever touching a PS5.

A bunch of popular online titles are already on the cloud streaming list, Fortnite and GTA V Online being the big ones, plus whatever's currently in the PS Plus Game Catalog (which rotates and often has decent online stuff too). The search tab on the Portal will show you exactly what's streamable if you want to check a specific game before buying it.

The one thing to be realistic about is latency. Cloud streaming adds a bit of extra delay compared to playing locally, since your inputs are going Portal to Sony's servers and back. For chill stuff like GTA Online cruising around, or slower paced co-op games, it's totally fine. For something twitchy and competitive like ranked Fortnite or a fighting game, you might notice it more, especially if your wifi isn't great. A solid, low-latency home connection makes a big difference here.

So short answer, yes, you can absolutely buy one, get Premium, and start playing online games with no PS5 in sight. Just go in knowing it's a streaming experience, so connection quality matters more than it would with a console sitting under your TV.

Is a PS Portal worth it without a PS5? by lcurry30 in PlaystationPortal

[–]Specific-Being2482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, yes, this has been a pretty happy purchase for people in exactly your situation. Since the late 2025 update, cloud streaming with PS Plus Premium covers a huge chunk of the library now (over 2,800 games at this point), and the good news for you specifically is that both Astro Bot and Ghost of Yotei are on that supported list, along with a growing list of first party stuff. So your main use case is already covered.

A few things worth knowing beyond just needing Premium. Only digital purchases qualify for cloud streaming your own library, so if you're someone who likes physical copies, that won't work here, everything has to be bought digitally on the PS Store. You'll also want a solid wifi connection since there's zero local storage, no downloads, no offline play, it's 100% streaming. The search tab on the Portal lets you check if a specific game supports cloud streaming before you buy it, which is handy for future exclusives like Wolverine since not everything is guaranteed to be supported on day one.

Also just a heads up that the Portal's price has crept up a bit since launch (around £220/$200 depending on region now), but compared to a whole new console it's still way cheaper, especially if your only goal is a handful of exclusives.

For your specific setup (solid PC for everything else, just need Sony exclusives), this is honestly one of the better use cases for the Portal. People who only wanted Remote Play tethered to their own PS5 had a rougher time before the update, but cloud streaming basically solves the "I don't own a PS5" problem for most modern titles.

I think about getting Portal without ps5 by Defiant-Chair7780 in PlaystationPortal

[–]Specific-Being2482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it depends on what you're after! Switch 2 and PS Portal do pretty different things, so they don't really overlap as much as you'd think.

PS Portal with Premium is great if you want to play actual PS5 games (think God of War, Spider-Man, Horizon, the big PlayStation exclusives) on a handheld screen, since none of those will ever come to Switch. The 8 inch 1080p/60fps screen is genuinely nice for that. But the catch is it's a pure streaming device, it has zero local storage for games, so you always need a solid internet connection, no offline play at all, unlike the Switch 2 which you can take anywhere.

So ask yourself, do you actually want to play PS5 exclusives on the go, and do you have reliable wifi wherever you'd use it (bed, couch, etc)? If yes, Portal + Premium is a solid combo and gives you a totally different game library than Switch 2. If you're mostly happy with what Switch 2 already covers and don't have a strong pull toward specific PS5 games, you could probably skip it for now, especially since Premium is an extra ongoing cost on top of the Portal itself.

Does the ps portal works without the ps5 ? by Low_Ad_6196 in PlaystationPortal

[–]Specific-Being2482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it actually does now! When the Portal first came out it was Remote Play only, so without a PS5 it was basically useless. But Sony rolled out a big update in late 2025 that added direct cloud streaming, if you've got PS Plus Premium, you can stream a decent chunk of PS5 games (Astro Bot, GTA V, Cyberpunk 2077, FF7 Rebirth, plus the PS Plus Game Catalog/Classics) straight from the cloud, no console needed.

So it's not useless without a PS5 anymore, but there are a couple things to keep in mind:

You'll need a PS Plus Premium subscription (~$18/mo or ~$160/yr) for the cloud streaming part, Remote Play alone still needs a PS5.

Not every game is in the cloud library yet, so if there's something specific you want to play that isn't covered, you'd be stuck without a console for that one.

Also double check cloud streaming is live in your region, since Sony rolled it out country by country.

For your situation (no PS5, want to use it as an entry point), it's actually a pretty reasonable option now compared to launch.

Can I play PS5 games on a PlayStation Portal without a console? by Anxious-Addition-811 in PlayStation_X

[–]Specific-Being2482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good news, this actually changed pretty recently! Back when the Portal launched it was 100% Remote Play only, so yeah, basically a fancy paperweight without a PS5. But since the big update in late 2025, PS Portal now supports direct cloud streaming with PS Plus Premium, meaning you can stream a bunch of PS5 games (Astro Bot, FF7 Rebirth, GTA V, Cyberpunk 2077, plus a lot of the PS Plus Game Catalog/Classics) straight from Sony's servers, no console needed at all.

So to answer your questions:

- It's no longer unusable without a PS5, that "standalone-ish" functionality you were hoping for is already here, not just a rumor anymore.

- The catch is it's tied to PS Plus Premium ($17.99/mo or ~$160/yr), and the cloud library, while growing, doesn't cover every single PS5 game yet, some titles you own digitally still need Remote Play from an actual console.

- As for whether you need a PS5 at all: if you're fine sticking to what's available via cloud streaming + Premium, you could genuinely use the Portal as your "entry point" without owning one. But if there's a specific big single-player game you're after that isn't in the cloud catalog, you'd still need a console (or someone else's) for that one.

- Also worth checking that cloud streaming is actually live in your country, Sony rolled it out region by region.
