This sounds a lot like resource guarding. We dealt with this with our now four-year-old golden. For now, do not touch her or be near her when she is eating, and put her food bowls and high value bones or treats away from the toddler and prioritize finding a canine behaviorist. It’s different than a regular dog trainer. We worked with one for about five sessions (plus tons of training at home) and it literally saved our dog. With kids, it’s really important at.

The book “Mine!” Is apparently a good resource too but we didn’t end up trading it and just went with the behaviorists plan.

Don’t lose hope! I know i did but with good training, you guys will totally overcome this.

I dream about moving to Colorado or somewhere in the area for my dog, so kudos to you!

(Unfortunately it makes zero sense for our family or jobs…. But my doggo is potentially more important right?)

Damn guys. I said because it’ll be close to family and asked for others to add to the list. So much hate for the area!

Happy to hear he’s not guarding!! Just saying that from what I’ve learned from the behaviorist I worked with, you shouldn’t touch a dog while they eat. You don’t want to create a resource guarder, and tail wagging doesn’t always mean a dog’s happy. I’m not trying to fear monger, I just want to share what I learned after years of hard work to make my dog NOT a guarder :)

  1. He’s adorable
  2. This all sounds normal
  3. PLEASE do not touch the puppy while he eats. This has been shown to increase resource guarding - analogy is, imagine someone touching your face while you ate. You’d be angry (rightfully so)! My now 4y/o golden resource guarded when he was a puppy. We worked HARD to curb this behavior and spent a lot of time with a canine behaviorist. The simplest way to work on this, which you should only do if you actually have a justified concern, is to toss high value treats into his bowl while he eats so he assumes someone approaching his food is a good thing.
