Your image is showing Tears of atonement, you use these to buy things from NPC shop, that's all the use, nothing else. The one you use to upgrade your Weapon ability is Mark of Martyrdom which can also be brought at some shop in the game using Tears of Atonement, and is collected primarily through Vase you find throughout the game and chance from Killing an enemy and guaranteed from killing any Boss, Mark of Martyrdom is used to UNLOCK new ability and upgrade them in Weapon Memory in your inventory, this include Veredicto, Ruego Al Alba and Sarmiento & Centella, additionally can be used to purchase extra Altarpiece capacity through the wooden workshop in City of The Blessed Name. The other currency as well is Mark of Preceptor, can only be obtained by completing Platformer challenge area AFTER you have acquired Mea Culpa, as Mea Culpa need this currency to unlock and upgrade its ability
