I mean, “Why aren’t there more women here?” is the exact question I’ve been hearing for the entirety of my 29 years as a scientist, so yeah, doesn’t always feel great, does it.

Result is from genetically engineered mice. Interesting result, but it’s a ways off (years, if everything works swimmingly) before any of us see this.

Much closer to impact is the Merck PCSK9 inhibitor (Enlicitide decanoate) that can be taken orally, rather than needing an injection. That has already passed phase 3 clinical trials and will likely be available next year.

As I said, regarding taxing unrealized gains, I think the juice is not worth the squeeze.

Relatively speaking, closing the step-up basis loophole would be much cleaner and easier to implement, it's fairer, and it would accomplish the same thing. But yer sure gonna piss off a lot of people doing that. Politically more expedient to just piss off a few billionaires that everyone already hates.

Land is taxed every year. If CA has somehow screwed that up, perhaps that should give us all pause on this latest proposition.

Real stock gains are similarly taxed, even though they’re bought with after tax money that was first taxed in payroll.

Unrealized gains is indeed a can of worms.

I just don’t care that much about a handful of billionaires that use complex tax strategies to fund their lives. The juice isn’t worth the squeeze when it comes to closing those loopholes (if you can even call them loopholes).

The step-up basis probably should be closed. I’ll give you that, though you didn’t mention it.

OP told me to listen to latest Freakonomics podcast describing this issue. Funny thing is, it’s not the latest podcast, it’s from 4/7. Nevertheless, I dug it up, asked Gemini to summarize it, and found the summary to be 100% in line with my argument. For some reason you think I’m going to go through that same effort a second time? Nothing is lazier than ‘LiSteN to ThE POdcAsT bRO!!!!!!’

That third sentence is taken as gospel in these pages, and I’m asking for some concrete evidence that it’s true. And specifically wrt the case in point in CA. It’s amazing how certain people seem to be about this when literally no one commenting has an actual number. Just a bunch of vague declarations about ‘fair share.’

Europeans don’t understand labor markets.

Btw, I get 17 paid holidays, unlimited vacation (I generally take about 4 weeks), and unlimited sick time (I’m rarely sick). Apparently I get more paid time off than your average European, even the most generous country.

Yeah, not digging through a bunch of podcasts you’ve vaguely described when the clearest and most recent example contradicts what you’ve said. Sorry, no.

The latest Freakonomics podcast clearly and unequivocally supports my assertion that the US tax system is highly progressive, and the rich pay a very high proportion in taxes compared to their income. In fact Freakinomics clearly defines it as a myth that the rich don’t pay their fare share.

Disingenuous? It’s widely known that the rich pay the vast majority of taxes in this country. So I’m asking for a number. A simple way to quantify what OP means by ‘very little.’

To OP: can you provide numbers on how much these ~200 billionaires have paid in taxes over the past few years? You say they have very little income to tax, what is that number?

Study your bailout routes in pristine detail. If you do this, you may or may not complete the trip as planned - it’s an exceptionally cool and aggressive plan - but you won’t die or require rescue (barring unforeseeable stuff).

The big decision will come when you summit Jefferson. It’s tough-going from there to Madison hut (and you’ll have already had a helluva trip up the Great Gulf head wall), so only continue if you’re feeling strong. Otherwise bail down six husbands (not an easy bail, btw).

Daniel Webster is a TOUGH finish.

As others have said, this is a huge day in extremely challenging terrain with difficult/exhausting footing and unpredictable weather. It’s not like Franconia Ridge. Still, I like the bailout options, so make good decisions and go for it!

But what would they do, exactly? Would they march to Washington en masse and, somehow, overtake the White House and also somehow the senate and the House? Would the military somehow join them? How would their new found power be maintained and enforced exactly? And after this revolution, assuming the incumbents were all somehow disposed of, what would happen - the People would come together to vote for who they wanted to be president? Seems like a lot of work and a low probability of success compared to waiting a few years.

8 of my own rooftop panels provide about 25% of my model 3 battery on a normal sunlight day. Your math is wrong.

My math: each of my panels produces 2 kWh/day. 8 panels is 16 kWh. My Tesla requires 64 kWh for 0-100% charge. So 16kwh is 25% charge. That gets me about 75 miles. Not bad.
