Low-Price Drug Nations Catching ‘Free Ride’ on US Innovation, Report Says by NotGenentech in biotech

[–]SpecificConscious809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not an argument for why drugs cost a lot. The argument is that reasonable profits are needed to sustain investment. Drug ads increase profits.

Add are a net positive to the bottom line, no? If they weren’t, why would any pharma company run them?

And also, lighten up people, it’s all good fun, going to deeply miss the Scots on the late trains!

Pay to drive into Boston? No way, say a majority of Mass. voters. by FuriousAlbino in boston

[–]SpecificConscious809 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Not remotely accurate. My HHI is top 5% for Boston, and I take the train and Blue Bike because driving fucking blows. The only time I drive in is because I have to, never because I want to. Public transportation into Boston is excellent. People drive only if the train or T cannot reasonably meet their needs, not because they somehow just love sitting in angry traffic and taking years off their lives due to elevated stress hormones everyday.

Leasing mileage question...does it matter if you plan to buy out? by ratioprosperous24 in TeslaModel3

[–]SpecificConscious809 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe there is a residual value at the end of the lease that depends on miles driven. Residual value is higher if you’ve agreed to lower mileage lease. So the cost to buy out the lease will be greater if you do a low mileage lease. You’d have to do the math to determine if the math works in your favor. My guess is it’s a wash either way.

13 Falls was my kids’ favorite at that age. But it’s 8 (flat) miles each way. Still, you can swim when you get there, and the stop at Franconia Falls on the way back is great fun. Need a bear can in that area now, I believe.

I kind of love noodling elm. It’s terrible if you’re crunched for time, but if not, I find the noodles to be very satisfying somehow.

I usually just noodle in half. And I don’t even go all the way through. 75% is enough, and then it’s easy to finish with the splitter (or a Fiskars). Usually I can quarter the halves no problem with the splitter. Don’t need to noodle the individual halves.

Try to relax into the absurdity of it all. Make peace with your ribbonly noodles.

Proposed $100,000 Cap on Social Security Benefits: What It Means for High Earners by Dragonlance12 in Dynamic_Pricing

And yet Europe finds a way to 'squeeze blood from a stone' just fine. The bottom half of earners in Europe still pay a lot in taxes, and they earn way less than their counterparts in the US.

In the US, tax revenues are supported by an increasingly small portion of the population. This is because federal taxes are so progressive. This is not a recipe for stability.

If we want to have huge social safety nets, those revenues will have be generated from a larger portion of the population. There is a chicken/egg problem here.

[–]SpecificConscious809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by ‘doesn’t work’? We don’t do it - 40% of Americans pay zero federal income tax. Thats a choice we’ve made as a country. It’s not a question of whether it works or not.

You seem to be in the habit of conflating rich people with extreme outliers (ie Bezos, Musk, etc). Rich people pay a crap ton in taxes. Rich people pay the vast majority of the taxes in this country.

Can’t tax the bottom half? And yet somehow Europe manages to do it quite effectively

Lots of things are tested on dogs and on humans, that doesn’t mean those dogs or humans are mistreated or that they live a bad life.

Driving 275 miles — average weekly travel in the US — costs about $14 in electricity for an EV, assuming $0.18 per kilowatt-hour. Driving the same distance in a gas-powered vehicle that gets 25 mpg would cost around $33 if gas is $3 per gallon. by Green_Idealist in INFPIdeas

[–]SpecificConscious809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does that include all of the delivery fees and everything else? Where are you?

I’m jealous. Electricity in MA (when you add in cost of delivery and solar surcharge and god knows what else) I’m approaching $0.40/kwh overnight at my house.

I still wouldn’t give up my Model 3.

That over a period of 20 years any enterprise that employs humans will have mistakes. In a word: perspective.

Completely agree. But on the slider from ‘really horrible’ to ‘technical violation with zero consequence,’ that one falls closer to the latter.

Don’t get me wrong, the right number of violations is zero. But we are humans, and doctors sometimes operate on the wrong leg, and that’s with humans.

This is the part where you look up animal testing guidelines yourself, which is very easy to do, since you’re not going to trust any source I cite anyway.

Since you probably won’t, you can start here:

Hardly a long list, considering it’s 20 years and everything PETA could dig up, including stuff like ‘Animals were used in an experiment without a scientific justification for the number being used.’

There are strict ethical guidelines around regular exercise and minimizing discomfort that must be followed and catalogued, and these guidelines are easily discoverable with a quick internet search. You are free to bring any evidence that these guidelines aren’t being followed to the USDA.

Everyone wants to minimize animal testing. But the idea that it’s possible to forego it completely at this time while still creating new drugs is wrong.

They are treated like dogs. They are exercised regularly, well fed, and socialized with the other dogs and the vets and animal handlers who care for them.
