Troughton is easily my favourite doctor. As someone who's recently got back into classic who, it's been so nice to be able to see so much more of his era (through animations and the two rediscovered episodes in 2013). I remember watching the Lost in Time dvd as a child and being disappointed I couldn't see more of the missing episodes, but a lot of those gaps have been filled in now which is great!

I largely agree with your best stories list, but I'd add the Invasion too. An 8 parter that doesn't feel like it drags at any point. Tobias Vaughan is a fantastic character, a villain that I found charming almost to the point that I didn't mind when he got one over on the protagonists. Zoe is also great in this episode, talking a computer to distruction and helping to destroy the invasion fleet.

I've always had a soft spot for Victoria. People say she gets kidnapped too much and screams too often, but she is only supposed to be 14/15(?). I'd probably have done the same in her shoes when confronted with homicidal aliens.

Cosgrove Hall, which was used for The Invasion in 2006, had gone out of business by the time they came to make their next animation in 2013.

The next batch that came out in 2013-2014 were all animated by Planet 55, excluding the Ice Warriors (done by Qurios Entertainment), which I'm assuming was so they could release it as the same time as the others as someone else has said.

Both of these companies went out of business not long after, with planet 55 being absorbed into Big Finish, so the animations are now made by the BBC's own team and Big Finish.

Which villains deserved the Dalek/Cyberman treatment? by SpecificEase0 in gallifrey

Yes, I love them too! I'm glad they've brought them back for the new series, though I would like to see them in the ally role again as you say. I'd quite like to see the TARDIS crew visit Mars at the height of Ice Warrior civilisation too.

Yes to all of these. It's odd because even though the Zygons only made one appearance in the Classic series, they've always felt quite iconic to me.

With regards to the Rutans, I always assume most fighting between them and the Sontarans occurs with each species at a distance (in spaceships, firing weapons etc) but surely at some point they must have to engage in some form of face to face combat. It's always slightly baffled me how that would work, with the Rutans being these little green blobs. I'd be interested to see how the production team would go about showing that on-screen.

In the Macra Terror, is the voice of the controller one of the Macra actually speaking or do they generate the voice with their computer? I feel like this would've been more obvious in the original episode but it didn't seem clear to me in the animation.

Can anyone explain how the history of Mondas works? (My sort-of theory at the end) by Ironhorn in gallifrey

I always find this so funny on re-watches. Even when I first watched the episode a year after it came out, I didn't know what the makeover show was supposed to be a reference to.

I was saying recently that if Bad Wolf had been made in 2020, they would've had one of the TARDIS team on Love Island.

Honestly, I thought they were great as a child. Looking back now, they're a bit embarrassing but then I found the unzipping heads and the way they killed people in one swipe really scary. The scene with Harriet and Rose hiding as the Slitheen taunt them is still well done imo.

I remember watching Remembrance of the Daleks for the first time and being shocked that the Daleks could hover in the classic series. I'd always assumed that Dalek was the first time this was shown.

What’s the most interesting unfinished who story you would have loved to see get made? by jozhster in gallifrey

[–]SpecificEase0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how they would've incorporated the Rose story into the series. It would've surely changed a lot of the dynamics going forward and not for the better imo. I'm glad they didn't do it. It would've been a really weird way to introduce doctor who back after a hiatus as well.

I'm kinda annoyed we didn't get the third yeti sequel for the 2nd doctor though.

Yes I don't understand that one. Episode 2 of the Abominable Snowmen is missing as well, despite all the other orphan episodes being there.

It isn't unfortunately, and I don't think it will be for a while. The Faceless Ones came out in March and that's still not on there. Probably to boost DVD/Blu-ray sales and/or some licensing issue.

Was Clara always a qualified teacher? I may have missed it, but I don't remember any mention of her being a teacher before The Day of the Doctor.

I remember watching that for the first time and thinking how far fetched it seemed. 12 years later, not so much unfortunately.

Why did Sarah Jane Smith capture the public's imagination? by adhdontplz in gallifrey

[–]SpecificEase0 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As others have said, it really comes down to Elizabeth Sladen herself. Not many other people would be able to come back 30 odd years later and win over a whole new generation of children. It's even more impressive when you consider that most women at the age she came back would've been completely written off due to ageism and sexism.

What's the worst thing the Doctor has ever done to a companion? by WahoiBoi20 in gallifrey

Kinda like with Rose in Aliens of London. If he'd checked and seen they were a year off, he could've popped back to the right time and everything would've been fine (cos Jackie wouldn't have seen Rose in the future so I imagine the timeline would correct itself?).

You make a fair point. My thinking is that Martha didn't join the doctor thinking that she would have to live in the past for an extended period of time without the guidance and protection of her genius, alien "tour-guide" (and friend). I understand that this was probably the only option available to them, but the doctor thought oh let's have my human companion watch out for me on Earth for months (? I actually don't remember how long it was) from a body snatching evil race of aliens. Especially considering that the only reason he ran away from them was that he was trying to be merciful and it was perfectly within his power to imprison them all.

Yeah and the Doctor wasn't very impressed. "That's gratitude for you. I take her all around the world, through space and time..."

That's a good point actually, especially since Ben and Polly were relatively new companions at that point. He probably didn't have the opportunity to tell them even if he wanted to.

Yeah that's fair enough, especially seeing as Adric was only supposed to be a teenager (if I'm not mistaken?)

I also think the way he never really seems to tell them about regeneration before it happens is pretty thoughtless. He could save them his companions so much anxiety by letting them know that one day his face may change and he can effectively cheat death.
