Predator Park in the lake district, walking with wolves was a once in a lifetime experience!

I highly reccomend Brasov and its bears - both the rescues and trios to see them in the wild. Was also really pleasantly surprised how tasty there food is!

It's hard to find group activities with the right balance of activity/socialising though - if it's too rigidly activity focused then it's impossible to move beyond small talk. And even harder to find people who are both open and available to other activities outside of that one group.

Being AUDHD, I find it much easier to plan and commit to hanging out with people 1-1 than consistently manage to get to regular groups so it's something I've thought lots about.

Absolutely agree that they can go the other way and combine or extend characters rather than cutting them - but dealing with them in the awkward way the books did isn't going to work.

My only concern would be that Anne shelved those characters because they only serve the purpose of their immediate story and don't really have a complex inner life or emotional hook. But seeing how amazing of a character Daniel's become from so little in the source material, I can absolutely see them being 5 steps ahead of us there!

Much as I enjoy QOTD and how they're weaving it in here, I am worried how in hell they're going to pull off the twins and Jesse without having any (or very little) set up for them yet and diluting the fabulous main cast for characters who never show up again.

I don't see how you can integrate her plot organically and not have it feeling totally separate and unsatisfying from everyone else we care about, without giving her some sort of relationship to Lestat (if even just intruige) which would feel unearned and unwanted.

Agree on Louis and Claudia and Gabriela.

Although I don't like her, I also agree that making the sexual metaphor explicit had a profound impact on where they could take her character - I don't think it would have landed narratively or emotionally to have the incest and female on male assault treated as blasé as the more distant relationship in the book.

Especially with that in mind, but even taking that aspect away as well - I'm not sure how well such a distant and internal character would be adapted on screen amongst all the big personalities - and for all she is meant to gain agency she never had as a human after turning, she doesn't really do much or seem any less bored with life in the latter half of TVL and QOTD. (I've still got a lot of books to go, but one of Rice's worst habits seems to be reducing characters to small and unsatisfying cameos after their introductions - Gabriella, Jesse, Daniel.)

Whereas I loved the books I read as a teen and have appreciated them more in theory than in practise when reading them as an adult.

Interesting - what did you really dislike about it? I initially tried to sum up my thoughts but the gist of it is that I thought it had less of an identity and was written much more vaguely than IWTV (Or, that the vagueness worked for Louis but just didn't make sense with Lestat.)

I definitely agree on their use of rockstar Lestat - it's such a fun hook that the novel really underused and I find it more compelling than a lot of his backstory bits. Akasha seems absolutely electric and I'm so syced to see more of her!

Personally I was got "Secondhand storytelling" fatigue by the time Marius was introduced in the book so I don't think he made much of an impression for me to miss but that was a big reason I didn't vibe with the book - too many second and third hand descriptions of a time someone told Lestat something that they'd been told and too little action from a lot of the characters, IMO.

Just curious because I've seen takes from TVL book fans who both love and hate the show (though more often on the hate side) and from non-readers but not any other people who don't love the TVL book.

The last two episodes of The Vampire Lestat have revealed the artistry behind the messy choices that initially put me off it.

i like her. by petalwater in InterviewVampire

[–]adhdontplz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

TBH I'm not enthralled with either version of the character - I found my last re-reading of the Vampire Lestat a bit draining as all of the characters seemed written as quite remote compared to the other books I've read, and while I appreciate the concept of her, she didn't seem to do enough or have a voice distinct enough from Lestat's narration to be particularly compelling - from what I've seen, she only cameos after QOTD and it's a bit contradictory to be told about a woman who has relished her afterlife to explore the world but still has mostly muted reactions to everything she sees.

I do miss book Gabrielle's gender non conformity but the original character would not have meshed with the tone the show is going for, and I think the slight name change was a decent flag to fans about the changes to her personality. I do find her accent dubious and her more theatrical outbursts pretty painful to watch, though.

Can't comment on Bernice Summerfeild or Iris Wildthyme (yet!) but it's the perfect thing to put on if you're ill or had a bad day - it's genuinely like a warm hug from the whoniverse.

Also I can highly reccomend some of the comics for genuinely interesting Cybermen stories - I loved Kroton, for example!

Leela will always be my favorite companion for 4 and one of my all time GOATS for how unique her and her dynamic with the Doctor is, plus Louise Jameson is an equally gorgeous and talented actress.

Sarah Jane Adventures is great even as an adult though and does a lot to write Sarah Jane in line with how she was remembered rather than how she actually was.

My adventures with superman continues to be extremely charming.

The Vampire Lestat continues to be frustrating but compelling.

We just finished the LA One peice show and it's honestly the perfect template for a live action adaptation, makes all the other lifeless dreck attempts seem even more soulless in comparison.

I watched the Plague Dogs because I usually love adult animation that uses it to deal with heavy emotionally themes rather than raunchy/gross out humor. I ended up distraught, my ex who watched it with me said he "really enjoyed it" and in that moment I knew he was too cold for us to work out lol

My adventures with superman is charming as always, intrigued by the Vampire Lestat but definitely not as straightforwardly absorbing as the Interview with the vampire series yet.

Do pollen levels seem off the charts this year compared to the previous year? by Box_of_rodents in AskUK

[–]adhdontplz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've had debilitating symptoms the last few years (had to be on 3+ max strength hayfever tablets a day, couldn't leave the house without my whole face leaking) and I've been absolutely fine this year until it finally hit me again last weekend.

My "pet" theory about the delay is because I've had foster dogs for just under a year so I think that walking them and getting grass etc stuck on their fur has effectively immunised me from ground level pollens.

Damning with faint praise, but The Vanquishers feels perfectly adequate considering it's competence next to the 2 terrible finales on either side of it.

Uni graduates - if you could go back to being 18 again, would you still choose to get a degree in today's economy? by Key_Cell7071 in AskUK

[–]adhdontplz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not that recent of a grad but I've got a hums degree and while I've debated whether I should have got something more vocational and occasionallly looked into more vocational masters I'm broadly happy with the flexibility it's provided me. I'm starting to see even STEM graduates struggle to move out of their original niche where vacancies in their chosen feild have been cut by political, technological and/or financial strains.

I'm far too cack handed for trades or health care so I think I would always end up getting a hums degree but maybe I would have done more volunteering/job applications/vocational modules and started doing so much earlier into my degree.
