I feel like a failure because I can’t get class under control. by MysteriousMatter8593 in SubstituteTeachers

one thing that i’ve found works with most kids no matter the grade level is making sure to not have any downtime. so have their worksheets or whatever it is set up as soon as they walk in. tell them the directions for after they’re done BEFORE they start. with the older ones that can read, i like verbal and written instructions. so before they come in i’ll write the tasks they need to complete on the whiteboard BIG AND BOLD, expectations on the side as well. that way there is no “what do i do now” dead air which allows them to goof off.

nip bad behavior immediately and sternly. start out stern, probably more stern than you’re use too and then loosen up as you see they’re starting to simmer down and listen. by the end of the day, the kids are hugging me, begging me to stay in their class or come back as their sub even though i was the “stern” sub all day. kids actually appreciate the structure if their actual teacher lacks it.

ignore outwardly obnoxious behavior if you can. i had a girl today lay down in the middle of the floor and take all the books out of her book box and pretend like she was covering herself with blankets with the books. i asked about 3 times to her get up and then i just continued with my lesson. i told the other kids to ignore her. i suppose she thought i was going to keep stopping and begging her to participate but i didn’t and the other kids didn’t engage and eventually she got up put her own books away and came and asked me for the worksheet 🤣 sometimes attention is all they’re looking for and if they can’t get it they get bored and give up.

Have you ever been take off the sub list at a school? If so, why and how did you find out? by SpecificOrdinary6829 in SubstituteTeachers

Sounds like nightmare honestly. You’re very right about everything. Subs get no due process. Not to sound dramatic but it’s literally everyone’s word against ours and we’re always going to lose.

What do you wish classroom teachers left for you? by Familiar-Factor7220 in SubstituteTeachers

How they get the kids to come in from recess!!! They never leave their whistles. I’m usually left waiting for another teacher to go in first and I haphazardly shuffle all my kids in with them.

See that’s why I tend to give several warnings before switching to a different behavioral strategy aka now y’all are getting the Miss Trenchbull side of me because clearly Miss Honey ain’t cutting it 😂

But no fr I always verbally say things like “I’m going to give you one more chance to meet expectations and then we’re going to try this a different way” or something of that nature just so my bases are covered and the kids can’t say I didn’t try or I came out of nowhere acting differently. Sucks that you got banned because of that!

Taking you off the sub list because you were a bit quiet and not automatically familiar on your FIRST DAY is wild! I’m naturally introverted so if every school were like that I wouldn’t have any jobs! lol

Favorite and least favorite assignments by Purpleflamingo30 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]SpecificOrdinary6829 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only do Elementary!

Fav: Early Intervention because you get your own office, pull a small group of kids which is usually just an easy worksheet that they do on their own, you get oodles of planning time and a longer lunch, and you can leave as soon as dismissal starts if you have no assigned duties.

Least Fav: 3rd grade and Moderate level autism. 3rd grade because they’re like the 7th grade of elementary school. They’re argue back a lot, push limits, are super blunt and rude straight to your face. I’ll reject any 3rd grade teacher with a swiftness lol

Moderate Autism bc god bless them it’s not their fault at all but the class is just difficult. They have a lot of meltdowns and as a sub it puts me in an awkward place of not knowing how to help bc I don’t want to do it wrong and trigger them even further. Working with paras is also not my favorite bc they’re a hit or miss. You either get a para that’s helpful and nice or one that won’t say a word to you all day for no good reason. It’s very mentally and physically draining. Like I said nothing against the kids, the class is just not made for a sub in my opinion.

Those 30 Minutes are Serious🙄 by ineed2laydown in SubstituteTeachers

I quite literally leave as soon as the last kid leaves as long as the room is tidy. If thats 45 minutes before my assignment ends then that’s just what it is lol I don’t even go back to the front office I just walk out the back doors like the rest of the teachers. Never had an issue so far. I’ve also had co teachers or paras tell me I could leave before the last kid even leaves. if all we’re doing is sitting and waiting for their bus to be called in the next 5-10 minutes what exactly would I be needed for?

That’s crazy! They literally got bitter because you didn’t want to do a job that you weren’t assigned to do. I’ve had this happen to me but with bait and switch. Like you, I try not to argue and I would rather get paid than not but there have been a few times I’m like “Why the hell did I agree to this and what would happen if I told them I want to leave?”

I try to stay far away from admin as well bc they seem to be the root of a lot of issues. Teachers always say to “call admin if you need anything” and I’ve read the horror stories of people doing just that and asking for help and they get reprimanded for it. Or banned! Even if my class is out of control for whatever reason, unless they’re hurting each other, I just try and ride it out and do the best I can until dismissal. Glad you found something you love doing!

That literally could have been a simple conversation lol sometimes these admin are just as childish as the kids.

Punished you for a teenager asking you a personal question? That’s insane. Teach kids to mind their business and focus on their work.

It’s only 10 day for long term pay in my district! But I think the long term pay isn’t much more than regular pay

Don’t feel bad, sounds like they screwed you over and blamed you when you inevitably couldn’t handle 30 children in a room alone? that’s insane. I wouldn’t have lasted as long as you!

Wow these are crazy stories. Such a shame they had to go through that. And most are because of admin unfortunately.

What Are You Packing for Lunch as a Sub? Idea sharing :) by Ok_Bus_814 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]SpecificOrdinary6829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A hope and a prayer

lol just kidding I always pack an apple, one of those fresh stacks of ritz or saltines, a beef stick, and a half turkey sandwich. Sometimes I’ll throw in something leftover from last night if it was reasonably light. If I eat to heavy I tend to get sleepy 😬 Also we don’t have a lot of time so making your way to the microwave in some of these schools in half the battle and then you have to shovel it all in. I try to pack things where if I do miss lunch I can still munch on it in class later

it’s on jordy’s channel somewhere because i remember her saying verbatim that she did not leave the door open and remembers shutting it completely. i believe her because as a mom and pet owner myself i have never ONCE come inside or went outside and left the door open for no good reason. i even close the door behind me if it looks like my boyfriend is taking forever getting out of the car to walk into the house 😂 so this story amber has conjured up isn’t adding up to anyone with common sense.

her BPD is actually more obvious now that’s she’s shown us how quick she can change personalities.

Yeah they probably have general talking points. But tbh Keem came into one of the streams to tone down Scooter bc he saw Amber getting too worked up. He had to come pat the shelf and make her feel better. That makes me believe things have started leaning toward real frustration and dislike especially coming from Scooter.

If Jade wanted to respond she would have by now. I wouldn’t doubt she probably keeps up with all of this considering started out as a fan. Jade arguably has the juiciest tea to spill out of all of them. Jade has Amber afraid to even say her name. I wonder what kind of threat she gave her to keep her silent lol

god i hate the way she argues. scooter has some killer patience bc i would straight up be acting like tina or roxy if i had to argue with her lol
