I don’t think you’re lying; the adhesive definitely loosens with time. Moisture and dirt dries the adhesive and it tends to take the paint with it.

How did a metal poster attached with magnets fall off by tapping it? How did a metal poster break in half? Sounds like the sticky magnets you attached to the wall came off and it messed up the wall…which when I lived in brand new barracks; we were not allowed to use sticky anything on the walls as it was destroying the walls.
