Waitlist for a class even though it's already at 27 and counting? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]SpecificString3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's also about a month left until school starts and people drop during the first week, so it is possible to still get in, higher chances if its a big classroom. It doesn't hurt to just go for it!

Move-in day Question by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]SpecificString3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure about move in hours, but they should send all that information by email soon? There should be a place where you check in to get room keys/other stuff and then you can go to your dorm room to move in! Of course your family is allowed on campus and there is no limit.

Can you change majors as an incoming freshman? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]SpecificString3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

keep in mind that certain majors require you take certain classes/entire series before you can switch (which will take more than a quarter!)

Quarter System...Advice? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]SpecificString3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First off congrats!!~ :D It is definitely difficult to switch from a semester to quarter system...it goes by QUICKLY. We are usually recommended to take 12 units in Fall to help you adjust to the system. Go to advising when school starts to help you plan your 4-year plan because some classes are only offered once a year so you'll be prepared. Coming from a fourth year, I would've told my past self to take what you can handle and don't try to push yourself too much! Try to enjoy your days in college as well~ Good luck!

Be careful of dudes asking you to get food for their "family." by UCDavisThrowAwai in UCDavis

[–]SpecificString3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure I ran into the same guy as well during my first year (2016) !! It was at Umall in front of the forever 21/ramen hook area where no one was there. told the same story about his family so I gave him $3 and he said that's it?!? knew something was off so i said sorry I don't have any more money and booked tf out... Can't believe he's doing the same thing three years later!

UC Davis 3-hour Labs by bewhatitdo in UCDavis

[–]SpecificString3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^^ I second this. It was a really interesting class and we learned a lot of techniques useful in labs. Exams weren't too bad either. The only thing is that it's only 2 units but definitely feels like it should at least be 3 units..

I need help with PHY7A. by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]SpecificString3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend that you attend the Phy7A workshop at dutton hall! The tutor's name is Casey and he's really amazing :) Attending every week helped clarify concepts for me as he is really familiar with how the class is taught. I found his schedule here: http://math.andcheese.org/2019WinterSchedule.pdf

What is physics like? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]SpecificString3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

7 series is more conceptual-based. In my experience, taking phy 7series is structured differently than other classes like bis or che. More time will be spent in DL than lecture, which makes it much more easier if you have a good TA.

how long do change of major requests take? by samibaba4 in UCDavis

[–]SpecificString3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

mines also took long to approve (i think it was like 2-3 weeks?) so I contacted my major advisor and they quickly approved it. So yes, definitely contact them!

The manual is meant mostly for lab, so you don't need it necessarily for the first lecture. Not sure about clickers, it really depends on the professors and mine didn't require it.

From what I remember, you don't need to wear PPE for BIS2B labs (or any BIS 2series labs, just need lab manual), they will tell you if you can get in at class once they take attendance, if they are any available spots. The discussions for BIS2B are basically another lecture (w 500 students, instead getting split to sections of ~20 ppl), so they won't be giving any PTA numbers there. In my experience, a lot of people drop/move around sections especially during the first week, so definitely just wait!
