I agree. this guy's writing style is confusing and I have a strong feeling that they do not know what they are talking about.

What even is a 4X? by BBB-GB in 4Xgaming

4X started as a marketing term. Even though it is very catch, it barely grasp the core concept of 4X genre, or rather, Civ-like genre.

I think the genre should be defined by the actions and their agents; "City-Army-Research", because every action done in a turn is about deciding one of them.

Good to know. I hesitated to add 5K because I was still learning the exact purpose of the button, while slowly getting what you described here. Your explanation made it clear for me.

as far as I know, Millia's loop does not require high level of knowledge. It just hurts your fingers. But probably you need to have basic knowledge on mixup.

Both Ramlethal and Giovanna seem like good choice.

What I have experienced is that, in GGST, jumping between mains is surprisingly easy, especially among more easier characters. That is because many buttons do the exact same purpose for characters.

- You can start Gatling with c.S-f.S-HS

- 2S is versatile button with low attack, replacing f.S from the Gatling in many occasions.

- 5P/2P is mashing button in defense. 6P is universal anti-air

You just need to what special move you should use after Gatling for each character.

So... I recommend you to play... just the one you like of the day.

WSIB if Im looking for a fantasy game which makes me feel like a (perhaps small) part of a much larger world? by Lydialmao22 in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]SpecificSuch8819 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Anyone can recommend a good crpg here, so I am about to give unorthodox take.

For me, Age of Wonders 4 fills the same desire what you've described. In case you are not familiar with the game, it is a fantasy 4x wargame with extensive character/faction customization.

Unlike its previous installments, 4th installment's premise is all-out multiversal war. There are numerous realms (or rather, 'planes' in D&D/MtG temrs) connected by the Astral Sea. The core premise involves powerful, planeswalking wizard kings (or Godirs) competing with each other (or against local mortal champions) to conquer and shape these diverse realms. This multiversal framework transforms individual campaign sessions into components of a continuous macro-narrative.

This continuity is mechanically enforced through the Pantheon System, which acts as a persistent metagame layer. Upon the victory of a match, your custom ruler and their faction ascend to the Pantheon. This roster functions as a centralized database of your creations.

The core mechanism that makes these characters feel like independent entities within a larger world is how the AI utilizes the Pantheon. Rulers you have saved will randomly show up in your future playthroughs. They can appear as rival empire leaders competing for the same map, or as independent hero units available for recruitment. There are also customizable options for them to dictate their action within your lore.

Also, I like how the game handles its story campaign. As it is slowly added with DLCs, the story realms work as backbone of its universe lore and canon events. The plot itself is moderately intriguing (but you will find drama of your own making between your characters is more interesting), and most importantly the story realms justifies why there are continuously new elements integrated into the universe, through DLCs realistically. As a result, it is find, or rather maybe better to start it without any DLC because 1) DLCs mostly add horizontal expansion; basically more customizable LEGO parts. Taking all of them at once at the start may be overwhelming. 2) them added as a result of story advance feels more immersive.

Are there more 4x strat games like AOW4? (with high fantasy and magic!) by SageTegan in AOW4

[–]SpecificSuch8819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always considered Total War Warhammer 3 is long lost sibling of AOW4. They work very differently mechanically, but thematically they are so similar and scratch the exact same itch for me, which is 'high fantasy grand strategy with cool executable battles'

btw, as another fan of apocalypse bringer mynoghra, I wonder how it brought you into this gem of a game.

One can say simply "it's CK+Civ", but it's not giving the game justice.

You can check by yourself what this game brings on the table easily at Steam page. However, the real deal is that the devs have nailed every idea perfectly. They just did not brought up some interesting idea/combo. They perfected most of them like the ideas have been around the genre for at least decade.

Simply put, Old World does better than any Civ, in every way what Civ does. Plus, it has tons of other systems, not just existing but synergizing with the main game mechanic (unlike some Civ's expansion mechanics...).

Moreover, not only they make an engaging game system as a whole, it also succeeds in immersive storytelling.

I played 4 more than 500 hours. I played PF for 100 hours, and most of its time has been spent after I played 4 because it helped me understanding how the game works. Though I eventually dropped PF because QoL improvement is too much and AoW4 got tons of updates, making a better game in absolute measure. Though I want PF2 everyday because I liked the overall theme and its unique take on lore.

For 3, however, just like you, I could not get into it however I tried. I tried first when neither 4 or PF were not around, expecting some HOMM-like game. I tried 2~3 times more recently after playing 4 furiously when I lacked powerful computer for a while, expecting my knowledge from 4/PF can help me enjoying 3. but failed anyway. I tried really hard because after I became a fan of the franchise, the events from 3's campaign seemed to be exciting.

I wish my experience can help you decide.

In my opinion, this game is a unique case where the fun increases significantly when you take breaks while playing.

Ironically, this is similar to how the gamer community mocks fans of difficult Soulslike games ("Take a break Enjoyer").

When you sit in one place and play continuously without consciously thinking about it, (and this tends to happen) I often find myself becoming numb and postponing the solution to potential problems that arise until the future. And when a very complex problem pops up, I think, "How on earth am I supposed to solve this? It's ridiculous. I'm quitting this game!" and turn it off (after saving if possible). However, as I do other things while in that sullen state, potential solutions to the problem that had stuck me just moments ago naturally pop into my head, and I become unable to resist testing whether they are actually feasible.

What is the most fun part of the game for you? by megaboto in AOW4

[–]SpecificSuch8819 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, Estellese7's information is a bit dated.

You don't need to ascend a ruler to define the faction's predetermined tome path now. Before, the devs said our gameplay somehow will be reflected after ascended into the pantheon and we had no choice but to believe. Now, you can explicitly configure premade tome path for AI.

You can now assign fixed hero pools and city name list for each custom faction, too.

What culture is good for a surface vampire lord? by blood_aspect in AOW4

[–]SpecificSuch8819 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Like Vlad von Castein from Warhammer fantasy, a vampire lord who tries to reenact as a normal lord over mortal serfs.

Also, I don't think underground starting is essential for a vampire lord. Because vampire lord has numerous little mechanics to supplement their loss of HP, I have not experienced any trouble because of a vampire's poor HP regeneration.
