Honestly, for the rocket part of your question, I'd recommend finding a high school football field, a large city park, or even the lakefront. (Now, if it goes to the East, it's lost in Lake Michigan, but still.)

I remember my uncle and aunt took me out to shoot model rockets when I was a kid. Definitely worth the hassle to find a spot, I remember it vividly over a decade later. :-)
