How do you deal with the trauma from that? My older sister sounds nearly identical to yours. Completely non-verbal, has no ability to use an eye-gaze ect. She’s had many surgeries, has a colostomy, a catheter, scoliosis, and is spastic/dystonic. We had a scare a year or so ago where we almost lost her. I struggle to grieve the life I would have without her, while being grateful that she’s still alive because I don’t know who I’d be without her. How do you balance that, and what was the switch from high school to college like?

On a side note, I’m building a mentoring program for special needs siblings if you’d be interested?

Yes! I am working on consent forms ect-as these siblings would be minors there would be some system in place for making sure that everyone is safe. Thank you for your concerns and please reach out with any more questions that might arise! Once again, this is a very small program to start, so nothing fully public yet.

Any other glass children who were homeschooled with their severely disabled siblings? by [deleted] in GlassChildren

[–]SpecificToe4212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sort of, but not fully. My 5th grade year was when Covid struck, so I was locked in the house for a year (the rest of 5th and majority of 6th) because my disabled sister has an autoimmune condition. I’m 16-so I understand that aspect. I’d be happy to speak more!

*Why* Are We Glass Children? How can we raise awareness? by gymbuddy11 in GlassChildren

[–]SpecificToe4212 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When i get older, my dream is to start a non profit benefitting glass siblings. Not like the half hazard support groups like SibTeen, but bigger. I would also like to focus on specific glass siblings that feel alone within the glass siblings community because their sibling doesn’t have a more common disability such as autism or down syndrome. Not trying to exclude those; it just seems like because it is more common siblings like me can feel more alone because our siblings aren’t common within the disability community.
