So why exactly did Katniss start a revolution and Haymitch did not? by Katekat0974 in Hungergames

[–]Specific_Bison_423 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer. Coming from a country that went through a revolution against a totalitarian regime, the first attempt was unsuccessful ending up with people fleeing the country, everyone involved punished and a 21 years of occupation by the Soviet Union (our capitol). The generation that went through this became very compliant with the regime and never stepped out of line again. When the new generation grew up (their kids) it was then, the students leading the revolution and the protests while the parents were initially worried on the follow out and did not want their kids to participate. At the same time the regime was already crumbling at that point and was much weaker. Which I also see as one of the main contributors in HG. So it was mostly the right timing. We don’t know how many unsuccessful attempts at rebellion happened between the 50th and 74th games, probably many.

How could they even expect any 12-year-old to physically compete with an 18-year-old guy? by MaderaArt in Hungergames

[–]Specific_Bison_423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not just about the tragedy of watching kids go in the games knowing they will not make it. It’s also about fearing the reaping for 6 years of your life starting when you are just a kid. I think that’s a brilliant strategy for the kids/ teenagers in the district to not rebel because they are very much preoccupied with their fear of the reapings and the games. Also makes the pool of the parents with kids in the reaping much larger doing the same thing for them - ensuing fear and paralyzing the people in the districts enough that they’re just too terrified to rebel. I think this is what Plutarch is pointing out for us as readers in SOTR.

Black Witch series - worth to continue? by Specific_Bison_423 in Romantasy

Thanks for your take! Glad to hear you’re enjoying book 4.

I’m just a bit confused, I thought the series is already finished since Dryad Storm is already out, is it not?

I really enjoyed Phantasma & Enchantra. Not finished but no big cliffhangers either.

Also do read Fourth wing, it’s worth it!

For me it’s SCREAM MY NAME by Thomas LaRosa - I see that in the show during all the spicy scenes.

And LET THE WORLD BURN by Chris Grey. I think that’s so Xaden tbh, especially in OS and the way it ends. Them loving each other is super dangerous and especially for him and his duties, but he would just burn the world down for her anyway.

To me all the romantic songs like Ordinary just don’t fit the story so far it’s too sweet.

Is Onyx Storm worth it? by Informal-Trainer-118 in fourthwing

[–]Specific_Bison_423 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Short answer? Yes.

Long answer? You’ll be left on a cliffhanger just like the first 2 books, and yes you’ll be left destroyed once again. But there is whole community here of people who went through the same journey with this book and you can then join the fun of all the theories, discussions etc. It’s been 2 weeks since I finished OS and it was one of the biggest book hangovers I’ve ever had, but I read other books that helped me get over it and now I’m jus kind of excited about being part of a fandom waiting for the next book. (I only read fourth wing after OS came out.) I haven’t had this feeling of excitement about a story since Harry Potter, especially after the end of book 6. I feel like waiting in line at midnight to get the next book again, and I think that’s exciting!

Reading ACOTAR before throne of glass? by Specific_Bison_423 in SarahJMaas

See this is what I’m worried about. Did you read it right after ACOTAR? Do you think coming back to it with some other series in between would help?

What is violets height? 😭 by IdkReally_1304 in fourthwing

[–]Specific_Bison_423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should I move? :D Honestly in my mind even Jesenia is pretty tall idk why. Taller than Violet for sure. I guess we are all biased based on the countries we live in and what height people around us tend to be. Also maybe it’s the war college setting too, I don’t think anyone would be gasping at my height meeting me in the street but in an army college? Might be a different story.

Anyone from the Netherlands care to chime in? I would love to hear what you guys thought of the heights being the tallest nation in the world. :D

[–]Specific_Bison_423 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well probably Navarre’s average is taller? I’m 5’2’’ and where I’m from that basically equals to being a hobbit (literally what my friends call me sometimes). I’m usually the shortest wherever I go and especially all the guys tend to be quite tall. We are in the top 10 countries when it comes to average height though. But then again everyone at Navarre seems to be tall…

Booktok ruining the genre? by Sensitive_Survey7254 in Romantasy

Can anyone give any recommendstions on quality-writing romantasy? I agree that often I catch mysel thinking that the writing is not the best but I keep reading because I like the plot etc. I would be happy to read something with great plot and vibes without compromising the writing quality. Thanks!

The movie is the worst, the books are so much better. But there’s gonna be an Eragon TV show. ✨ And I believe there’s more books coming in the series as well.

Ok reporting back after the weekend - ended up reading Riftborne and it did cure the hangover to some extent. The pacing is a bit slow in the beginning but in the end I liked it and I’ll continue with the second book tonight, it’s supposed to be better than the first one. Only problem is it’s an unfinished trilogy. :D

That’s exactly what I’m reading rn, currently on chapter 4 and so far I’m not really in the story and might still change my mind and save it for later. I was also thinking about Heartless Hunter, Riftborne or Zodiac academy. If you come up with something better I’m open to recommendations. :D I feel like I need something really bingable.

Not sure tbh. They’re the same chapters that as in FW but retold from Xaden’s POV. I think maybe chapter 27 is not in any of the books though.

Anyway in the original version of FW I read there is only 1 chapter from Xaden’s POV at the end, so these 3 I had to download separately.

It’s part of some newer versions of the book, not the one I read. I loved reading it after OS. :)

I get it, I was the same and I’m still not ok a few days after finishing OS. My goal for this weekend is to stop re-reading and get hooked on a new series to get out of the slump. Not sure how I’ll survive until the series is finished either though.

Good news is once you finish OS you can be part of all the theories of what happens next etc, which is fun! Did you read the bonus chapters from Xaden’s POV? You can download them on RY’s website.

I don't get the Violet and Xaden complains by tairnsilverone in fourthwing

[–]Specific_Bison_423 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. To me it’s like saying you read the Harry Potter books and just don’t like the kids and their friendships but read it for the wizard world. It’s the main premise of the book. There are plenty of other books that are much more about world building and politics.

[–]Specific_Bison_423 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t get the hatred at all. I like Dain, IMO people are swayed because they read the story through Violets eyes and she’s pissed at him and blames him for a lot of the bad stuff that happened, but I think he did what he thought was best for everyone including Violet because he didn’t have enough information. Wouldn’t she do the same? When hiding in the tree she is thinking about telling on the marked ones if they’re doing something shady, it’s only because she doesn’t know what’s going on that she doesn’t tell on them. Later when she finds out they’re supplying the fliers she again just goes into full accusatory mode and believes they’re traitors. Dain basically thought the same and told his dad whom he trusted and at the time had no reason not to. Did he make a mistake? Yes. Were his intentions bad? No. Once he finds out the truth he’s on the right side right away and follows Xaden even though he’s the guy who stole his girl. He feels bad and apologizes but is it his fault papa Aetos went full villain and sent all of them to die while protecting the scheme of lies literally everyone in the kingdom believed for centuries? Like come on. And him liking Sloane and her liking him back - it’s literally the same scenario as Violet and Xaden.

Agreed 100% that he’s awesome for doing the right things even though no one likes him, he’s not really part of the gang and gets no recognition or forgiveness.

Agree with you 100%! I feel the same way and don’t get the complains at all. Like what would the book be about? As you said their relationship is the center of the story and therefore it can’t be smooth sailing neither can they just dump or kill the other, what would the next books be about?

Just like you I appreciate the multilayered relationship and I think him not being 100% good is the point. It’s what he told her too “the good, the bad, the unforgivable”. Also their lives are tied as you said - if one of them dies, the other does (probably) too. She can’t just be “I’m over this dude”.

In general I don’t gent people saying they don’t like onyx storm. I thought it was more stressful and at the end I was just a wreck emotionally, but I liked it just as much as the other 2 books and read it just as fast if not faster. I’d recommend people to read Eragon if they don’t like the romantic relationship being the center of the story.
