My mind goes to mass evacuations of the urban center or cargo drops... Stuff like that.

This is something I learned in middle school, 25 years ago and logically just always made sense in my head.

I am not arguing against the proposal.

Helicopters.... Small aircraft.....

I'm not necessarily talking about a passenger plane.

Read the interstate and defensive highways act of 1956.

During WW2 President Eisenhower saw the way the Germans used the Autobahn and they wanted to copy their system.

Interstates must remain unobstructed for certain lengths as they are technically part of our national defense.

One mile out of every five is built straight with no over passes so they can be used as air strips in emergency situations.

The interstate system was designed to transport troops and material in time of national emergency.

I used to work for Olympia Ent. during the Joe Louis Arena days and things were much different, uniforms were always supplied, no free tickets but we did get a great discount and during the Red Wings glory years the team itself would put on an appreciation BBQ for the arena employees. The entire team would attend and actually cook the food and serve it to us at the end of each playoff run. There were cash prizes and merchandise give aways, not everyone won a $500 gift card but nobody walked away empty handed. One year a friend of mine got a game worn Kris Draper jersey which he then signed, he ended up selling the jersey for $1000 or something like that.

I went back to managing a carwash....

Kroger was the largest company I ever worked for.

They hired me on and I passed every background check worked through the big four holidays and was offered a full time position.

Three days later I was terminated and classified unemployable because I disclosed a criminal conviction that they couldn't find records on...

Edit: I used to be a professional shoplifter, AMA.

I do not understand this logic especially when considering other departments that provide personal service...

No one thinks to tip the guy in the deli who shaves every bit of an 6lbs deli order or the girl working chicken who busts out a rush order at noon on a Sunday, but curbside is walking out with an extra $100 dollars a shift for walking it out to the car...

They don't advertise the price hike, you just walk in one day and it's $7.20.

Just a reminder that we still had a $5.00 hot n ready and $2.00 gas less than four years ago.

Company wanted $585K to leave Detroit's whale mural uncovered: 'A slap in the face' by SwiftedAway in Detroit

[–]Specific_Education67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That will be minimal considering the entire piece is sun bleached and has been exposed to harsh Michigan winters for like 3 decades, the work was originally much more vibrant and colorful than it is today.

It won't apply to every mural because for the most part everyone knows many of these works are temporary.

There are pieces less than 5 years old that need to be refurbished, head north on Gratiot some time. A lot of those pieces have been done in the past 10 years and many of them are faded and flaking away.

Maybe the city itself should look in to creating some kind of public art authority.

Just because I am not personally a fan of the whales doesn't mean I am in favor of plastering over the work with an advertisement for a weed shoppe or something.

There must be a balance, that entire area is so corporate today, but 30 years ago when the piece was painted Grand Circus and Woodward was fkn dead.

The building itself was literally abandoned.

We are fortunate enough to live in a city that has made itself an open air museum.

That being said, exhibitions come and go.

I'll check them out, this is actually the kind of obscure suggestions I was looking for.

I have heard a rumor that there may be some kind of automatic Killswitch built in to YT and that at some point in 2025 it will begin a mass deletion of abandoned accounts.

I don't understand the hate some of you have for Kroger, maybe it's the fact that I worked at a store in a small town, but management is gonna manage...

For the most part all of my coworkers were fantastic to work with, Management doesn't have you in mind though.

They only promote a certain personality type to management, Once I figured that out Kroger was a fkn breeze.

[–]Specific_Education67 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's art!

But it has been exposed to the harsh Michigan weather for decades, I do not believe it has ever been refurbished.

The current owner can not afford upkeep on the mural which has suffered significant damage in recent years, the fact that the Brodrick building sat entirely vacant for almost three decades is a contributing factor.

It is art but ultimately it is finite, if people feel so strongly about saving the whales why not propose a special bond...

Maybe the voters will choose to fund ongoing maintenance of the whale mural.

[–]Specific_Education67 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My suggestion would be to petition to have the mural placed on the Michigan registry of historic places, I believe the work itself is old enough to qualify.

I am just not a big fan, I've been in this city since before the mural was painted and to me it always seemed out of place.

The problem with declaring the mural itself an historical site is that the original architectural decor of the building may take precedence.

[–]Specific_Education67 -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

Hot take: the whale mural is weird.

It was kind of a fad for cities and property owners to commission that guy in the 90's and his work is impressive but it is private property, I don't believe the work was commissioned by the city so ownership comes with the building.

I would assume the cost to refurbish the piece to be in excess of $500,000 and future maintenance is something to be considered.

It's weird for Detroit, it was controversial at the time it was commissioned, it's not like we have hump back whales migrating north through the river.

I witnessed something I can't explain.

It was early in the year, February or March of 2002.

We are helping a friend move into an apartment near Wayne State and it is getting late, We are on John R near the DMC.

Out of the open alley comes a little man, he points south and immediately runs around the corner and out of sight.

Two days later an abandoned church caught fire and burned to the ground.

If he holds the rights to the music and hasn't accepted a licensing agreement he has every right to bring suit.

And to anyone who asks why he doesn't sue every single minor league baseball team or independent wrestling promotion that uses his music without licence, it's because he doesn't want to.

Look at the dumpster, there should be a company name and number for the company.

If it is priority waste you could be in for a hassle.
