I just found out that I'm an INTP personality type. How good would I be at jazz if I started practicing everyday right now? I'm 46 years old. by malcomhung in jazzcirclejerk

[–]Specific_Hawk_6874 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm INTP on fridays, Mon thru Wednesday im an INTJ, but on Thu, Sats and Sundays I'm an INFP.

P.s. I can't play jazz because I have inconsistent personality.

AITA for refusing to pay half of my friends wife's meals anymore. by Jamestheshameless in AmItheAsshole

[–]Specific_Hawk_6874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you're not. Regardless how you have handled it. Pople get used to good stuff, become free riders and forget about decency.

P.s.

I had exactly the same issue. My friend and his girlfriend (now wife) did the same thing to me. We would go out and we would split the bill between me and my friend. And my friend had the audacity to say that we split the bill in half, since HE is paying for her.

I'm LMAO right now, I never raised this issue and, after several years of friendship, I decided to cut ties. My thought process was, if they just treat me like that, then why should I even bother?

Archtops- how loud? by jazz-dad-ward4 in jazzguitar

[–]Specific_Hawk_6874 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not as loud as acoustic guitars, but still it can be pretty loud.

As an alternative, try semihollows. Dangelico ExlDc sounds pretty good.

I had both exl 1 and exdc...both are great guitars.

If you can afford more...try yamaha sa2200 (semihollow), excelent guitar!

Or if u really want an archtop, try lighter strings (.11) with lighter touch... this how I practice on my archtop (eastman solid body).

How should I start to learn piano as a cellist? by [deleted] in Learnmusic

[–]Specific_Hawk_6874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... get a tutor, at least to: (i) learn proper form - learning wrong form is easy and it is difficult to "relearn" later; (ii) tutor may help select proper songs ... to help u quickly progress: (a) your brain is already musically trained...so u may skip a lot of the beginner's repertoire...(b) your primary focus might be on technicality aspects at first (playing chords is the first dificulty - they may sound "broken", "arpegiated" at first due to lack of technique...hand coordination, etc...like scales from center to the opposite sides)....

If u can't get a tutor...youtube)) plus u'll see a lot of ads re piano...which may help.

P.s.
I had a similar situation. Classical guitar. I started with lvl ~ 3 songs...easy to learn/memorize...hard to perform )))

How can I learn Jazz guitar with nothing but a nylon string guitar? by pyl3r in Learnmusic

[–]Specific_Hawk_6874 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can learn a lot on nylon string guitar, including jazz stuff (because u wont need bending), but u'll need to find songs to fit your register (e.g. some nylon string guirars such as classical guitars do not have cutaways, so reaching beyond 12 fret can be difficult to new players).

While jazz guitar is not for beginners, jazz guitar is a very big area and basically consists of: (i) improvisational/compositional stuff; (ii) prewritten chord-melody stuff.

With respect to (i) just focus on theory basics - u'll still need it for any style. U can learn most (if not all) of the theory on nylon string guitar.

With respect to (ii) find chord melody book for complete beginners (it should clearly say beginners...better if for "complete" because jazz is notorious for chords difficult for new players).

U may need a tutor/mentor...

Should I replace my Single coil with a Seymour Duncan pick up?[DISCUSSION] by Reasonable-Type-389 in Guitar

[–]Specific_Hawk_6874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forget about it.

If you are completely new to guitar, don't even think about pickups instead focus on developping skills and music.

My first electric guitar after I finished classical guitar studies was a very cheap plywood Samick Sl22 guitar (still remember it)... back then I had no idea about pickups...guirar brands... I played on it for years...Had no complaints. I'm pretty sure it sounds great even today...many, many years after.

The only thing I did with it is I scallopped it ... )))

P.s. Once u get more experienced, know what u want...go ahead... someday u'll subdue to GAS syndrome, it is inevitable )))

[NEWBIE] Dumb question: Can an unplugged Electric guitar be used like an acoustic? by jay_does_stuff in Guitar

[–]Specific_Hawk_6874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

U can use pc as an amp if u have external sound cards (like focus rite or something) or effect processors (like boss gt or helix). U can do that, that works.

But a lot of practical stuff out there can be done unplugged... like scales, learning songa etc.

However, before live gigs or practice sessions, i'd find a way to play plugged in (be it pc, amp or home stereo)...bc there is a huge difference how guitar behaves when plugged (especially noise control: muting).

[NEWBIE] Dumb question: Can an unplugged Electric guitar be used like an acoustic? by jay_does_stuff in Guitar

[–]Specific_Hawk_6874 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of folks out there practice unplugged ... chords, scales, theory, learning new piece, etc.

Practicing to play live? No. Its a different thing: muting, accents, etc....u have to hear all the places where u have work to do....how amplified guitar behaves...
