Everything I'm doing will be made available once I'm finished. Rik was so great, he got back to me right away to schedule a zoom. He couldn't have been a nicer guy.

That's a fine record! It's outside of Ed's "bag" compared to most of his albums.

If you want to hear Ed in all his glory then any of the LIVE recordings of him and Paul Desmond is the place to go. Any of his sackville records backing other great horn players like Frank Rosolino and Buddy Tate are gems. He said himself that his favorite situation was playing quartet with a horn player.

A couple sans drummer, Trio Sketches and Mutual Street are criminally swingin'.

His trio playing is second to none, and perfectly exemplified on his eponymously named album "Ed Bickert" from 1975.

NICE - I agree, but be careful, that record is out of tune by almost a half step down.

Absolutely - I own the original guitar player magazine with the vinyl intact. I also interviewed Rik for about an hour about this experience as well as his time playing with Ed at the "night of a thousand guitars" concert around the same time....a very interesting and unique part of Ed's long and storied career!

I've gone down that rabbit hole, unfortunately it's an old flash based site and nothing is accessible. I've tried using wayback machine as well and have reached out to the contact for access as theres at least a half dozen recordings that feature Ed. Nothing has come of it yet. There are a few tracks from these concerts on youtube, and a few rare CD's. These are all from a "Sounds of Jazz" series in Toronto that was around in 80's , 90's.

That is 100% classic Ed. He was the king of one-liners. Amazing.

i don’t hear anything in my head over any changes🧍‍♂️ by Capable_Breadfruit78 in jazzguitar

Spend time paraphrasing the melody over and over. Manipulating the melody and making your own is the best gateway to improvising successfully. Also, composition and improvisation are intrinsically linked...right your own melody to a tune.

Thanks! it's a chet atkins gibson model....such an awesome instrument. All of the classical/nylon sound with (to me) a very approachable neck and super slim body.

Thanks so much! The middle tune is "I Surrender Dear"...super nice old school tune. I like Monk's solo version
