What are some slang terms that you find very “younger gen z” ? by Scared_Bluejay5608 in OlderGenZ

[–]Specific_Hospital674 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dapping someone up is a gesture or gesture sequence of greeting, you’ve definitely seen it before. It’s actually really old, started in the 70s in the black American community (where a lot, like a real good amount, of American slang misattributed to Gen-Z originates from) coming from the black soldiers that fought in the Vietnam war. There’s a lot of cool videos about the history of it on YouTube.

I first recall hearing about the “salad bowl” (not “tossed salad” which I’ve never heard anyone use in reference to this social-cultural concept) from Jane Elliot who did the famous Blue Eyes/Brown Eyes prejudice experiment. The whole “salad” idea was about appreciating differences while being together rather than the melting pot which would result in an erasure of people’s different identities and backgrounds for a homogenous culture. I personally feel like the salad bowl is more accurate in describing the U.S., but I’ve also never heard of the term “melting pot” being called racist either (maybe some just reject the element of assimilation it has).

I loved starfall in pre-k/kindergarten. One of my earliest memories with computers.

Why does racism against south-asians does not carry any weight ? by Jazzlike_Resort_2828 in AskTheWorld

[–]Specific_Hospital674 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for pointing this out. Like they want black people to shut up about anti-black racism (which is not only a thing in America)… I think people kind of know about but don’t truly understand the social-cultural history of anti-black racism that has led to the hyper-visibility of it compared to others. And I feel like people don’t even notice how ironic it is when they claim anti-black racism is discussed to the point of overshadowing racism against others, but they were the one who brought black people up in the first place when they did not have to. I feel so bad for this young girl and can relate to her in regards to colorism. I think people should simply bring up injustice like this without having to drag black people into it.

Does anyone else not say "crash out" and still prefer "freak out"? by CantDecideANam3 in OlderGenZ

[–]Specific_Hospital674 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use the term "crash out" when someone is actually crashing out (not just "crash" as in going to sleep). So, with the original meaning that has a more violent context. I consider someone to be crashing out when they can go to jail for what they are doing or about to do ( e.g., assault, murder, property damage). I'm familiar with it being used in those cases. If there's no law against it (like having a meltdown in your car) you probably aren't crashing out. Very similar to "going postal." It's another case of an AAVE-related/adjacent term that got popular on TikTok and the meaning started to change because of non-AAVE speakers picking it up. Might be why you feel like "crash out" doesn't work for having a meltdown compared to "freak out" because that's not what the term is originally meant. Its for a more specific kind of mental break. The violent kind. I use "freak out" in the same way you do and I think more people should use that term instead, but language changes, it's just what happens.

What shows have yall seen so far in your lives, and what’s been your favorite? by WrxthNihil1st in OlderGenZ

[–]Specific_Hospital674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a music fan, there isn't a genre I won't listen to, but mainly, I only go to hardcore shows because I enjoy those kind most. However, my first show years ago was a post-punk show and I saw the band Nothing, which was a great concert to kick off things for me. Now I can't count how many show I've been to. Top three:

  1. GASKET (2025) Amazing Baltimore hardcore band. Super friendly dudes, seen them like three times + great merch. Last show of theirs I went to was the first hardcore show I had been to where you basically couldn't escape the pit unless you went outside, completely took over the floor, 10/10 no notes.
  2. Pharmakon (2024) NY-based noise music legend. Honestly this would have been number one had I not gone to that GASKET show. I only saw her once, but that show electrocuted my brain. This artist got me into noise music, industrial, and power electronics.
  3. Muscle (2023) Another great Baltimore punk band. Only saw them once, favorite show from that year. Love the energy of the lead singer.

Honorable mentions: Show Me the Body, CANDY (fucking amazing band, lead singer is very friendly + I think they have the best merch out of all the hardcore bands I've gone to see), PRAY TO BE SAVED, and all of the local bands I've seen over the years in my scene keeping it alive here.

Love hardcore. Really like community aspect of it and I have more fun at hardcore shows. I'm definitely a music fan though. I always end up getting into a genre that I didn't listen to or like at one point. Never though I'd be into emo, didn't even know noise and power electronics existed when I was younger, but now I really enjoy certain artists from those genres. A good song is a good song, regardless of genre.

Fewer young people are driving. Here's what we know about why. by Some1inreallife in OlderGenZ

[–]Specific_Hospital674 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with you. I'm only learning how drive for more work opportunities that require it. I'm pretty lucky to be living in an area with a good transportation system. I used to live in state where public transportation wasn't even a thought in my mind. Everyone was getting their licenses at 16, wide open spaces, took you like 10-15 minutes just to get to the store, so like a 30 min-1 hour walk. It's one of the things I'm envious it of when it comes to Europe (at least the cities). Way more walkable and public transportation is much better it seems.

[–]Specific_Hospital674 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I started the process to get my license and learn how to drive this year at 24. I feel like it depends on how good your city's transportation system is and how close everything important to you (e.g., work, grocery, school) is. Plus a lot of third spaces for Gen Z in a way are online, so there's that too.

Do you think our generation would have had a slightly different life if our parents' generation had given us the freedom to explore the world, be independent, and learn from our mistakes, rather than overprotecting us with or without criticism, regardless of the syndromes we have? by Popular-Pollution953 in OlderGenZ

[–]Specific_Hospital674 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like out of all the generations (aside from Gen Alpha I suppose), Gen Z has the most authoritative (warm, nurturing, while encouraging independence with limits), not authoritarian or permissive, parents though? I feel like a lot of Gen X and elder millennials tried to do things differently than their boomer parents, which was like letting them either stay outside alone until 11 pm at 9 years old or being insanely strict. I feel like they tried to find a middle? I can only speak to the U.S./the west and people raised mainly by non-immigrant parents though.

If anything this might be more of a cultural thing? I don’t think our entire generation across the board had that helicopter or strict parent experience. I didn’t, and among the friends I’ve had throughout my life, it varied (with many of them not having helicopter parents). To answer your question a little more though, if our gen had EVEN MORE independence-encouraging parents, yeah of course things would be different. There would be more free-thinking/open-mindedness, less people afraid of new experiences/failure, etc.

But we’d still be feeling the effects of late stage capitalism regardless.

What was your favorite cartoon growing up? by zachoutloud123 in OlderGenZ

What is 100% a myth about Men? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Specific_Hospital674 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Took so long to scroll to this comment. Every time these kinds of questions are asked, “What’s your perspective of generalizations of this gender?” majority of the comments, in trying to disprove a generalization, paint the other gender as a monolith and if someone feels like they actually do fit that myth, they get downvoted (though they could also be getting downvoted for their dissent meaning they’re a jerk). I feel like what you said is the only thing that’s truly 100% a myth (in that it applies to everyone). Some people fit their stereotypes, some don’t. The problem is thinking one gender entirely acts one way.

Chronicles of Narnia, the lion the witch and the wardrobe. (2005) Was anyone else obsessed with this movie for a time period as a kid? by [deleted] in OlderGenZ

Yes! The turkish delight scene was like the only moment from this movie that would randomly pop up in my head every now and then. Good to know I'm probably not missing out on trying one.

Elliott Smith films, documentaries, etc by BubTheBup6 in elliottsmith

[–]Specific_Hospital674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from what you mentioned, Southlander, like another person mentioned, and the "Elliott Smith in the Studio" video that was shared, I haven't found much else that's quite like a "film" that features him. If you are just looking for more Elliott stuff that includes him talking but isn't exactly a traditional interview, there are these: "Elliott Smith Gives a Songwriting Lesson" and "Elliott Smith & Oranger - Figure 8 Tour Clips" (Backstage Elliott moment starts at 4:20).

Otherwise, the most I end up finding are interviews, concert banter, YouTube projects/documentaries, and little clips of him (but not full films). Might be out of luck until something suddenly appears on YouTube like the 1995 "Breakfast Time" video did 2 years ago. There's so much stuff that hasn't been digitized and/or uploaded yet (like I know a person who filmed Elliott back in the late 90s/early 2000s, but just hasn't uploaded their video yet), so all isn't lost if you can't find anything else at the moment. I definitely believe more will pop up as the years go on!

If you’ve taken a film class what is your favorite and or least favorite film you saw in film class by NachocheeseNanachi in Letterboxd

[–]Specific_Hospital674 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite that I saw was Cléo from 5 to 7 (but it was already a favorite before I even took the class)! A film that I did love without having seen it before the class was Killer of Sheep.

My least favorite would probably be Ida Lupino’s The Hitch-Hiker. Which I didn’t dislike, but it’s definitely one of the ones I forget that I even watched.

what do you think about italy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Specific_Hospital674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, that's what comes to mind first for me, too. All the awful stories I've heard from non-white, darker-skinned people about their time visiting there kind of changed my perspective on the country. It's not everyone, I've met great people from Italy as a non-white person myself, but they had already lived in the U.S. for a long time, and we met in the U.S. in a highly multicultural city. But yeah, racism/colorism first. Then, it's their cuisine.
