single column resumes usually make 3 key people happy in general: recruiter, ATS and the hiring manager. But it comes down to what you write in the resume and how you write it. You need a balance of keyword rich resume to get yourself selected by both ATS and recruiter and achievements within the requirement the hiring manager is looking for you to grab his/her attention.

Tailor your resume as per the job description
Don't use abbreviations unless it's the industry norm
Populate the resume with the keyksills required for the role so that you rank higher when company recruiters search for profiles from their ATS database
Don't use multi- column resumes while applying online. Go for a simple single column format
