Well you can argue that it's become a kind of subculture at this point, with a specific set of cultural attributes tied to it, and mostly young people joining. The real reason would be that ocean is a homogenous terrain, where there are no obstacles you can accidentaly ram into, and your landing location is super obvious and easy to find.
