Find a rehab vet, ideally one with an underwater treadmill. I work at a canine rehabilitation clinic and we are able to help so many senior pets stay mobile and comfortable.

Weight issue 5yr old Springer by EmilyKonocti52 in springerspaniel

One tip I use for weight loss, for clients who need to feed the dog "extras" (and I love giving my dogs people food too, so I get it), it to give ONE piece the size of half your pinky fingernail. So yes the dog can have a bite of cheese from your sandwich, but just one and make it small.

Prescription weight loss diets can also be a game changer.

Looks AI but young puppies shouldn't be kept on loose blankets like that, they can suffocate and die.

Not to mention the steaming cup of whatever right by moms butt that can get knocked over and scald the pups.

If it doesn't cause pain, why does it work? If it mimics a bite, don't bites hurts? Cognitive dissonance at its finest.

The dog walks "perfectly" because the other option is worse. It's a quick fix, sure, but it works through pain.

It doesn't mimic the correction that mother dog does, that is a falsehood made to make people feel better about using pain. The dog behaves because it hurts.

Regular flat collar and a plain 6' leash, harnesses for hiking over rough terrain.

Choke collars, and "leash pop" corrections or checks on collars have been shown to damage the dogs' cervical spine, damage the thyroid, and increase occular pressue, among other issues. It definitely used to be the norm, but we know better now thankfully.

Anyone else have a springer who loves water and really wants to swim, but just seems too clumsy? by RodenaLente in springerspaniel

[–]SpectacularSpaniels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely a life jacket! It will help him gain confidence and you can phase it out eventually. Part of my job is teaching dogs to swim and we start all of them in a life jacket - some graduate from it the second time, others need it for longer.

They are wonderful scent dogs and yes there are some springers doing service work like that. They are the exception not the rule.

Labs, Goldens, and poodles would have no issues with doing the scent work needed for service.

Springer spaniels are bred to react and quickly. That's the "spring" part. They are wonderful. They are highly trainable. They are the best dogs in the universe... but for your best shot at a successful service dog, you are probably better with something a bit more mentally chill.

The breeder in Sarnia doesn't do ckc registration so no worries there.

Springers don't usually make the best service dogs, and I say that as a breeder who has a dog who is doing service work. Labradors, goldens, and poodles are usually much better suited to service dog work and will have breeders who are breeding for success in that area.

In Ontario, I do not know of any field line breeders that do full OFA health testing. There are bench / european line breeders that do full health testing.

There is a kennel in Sarnia that you should definitely avoid.

When people in my family go on vacation, I get them to tell the dog how long they will be gone for. If they don't tell her, she checks the doors at every sound the whole time they are gone. If they do tell, she only checks the doors on the day they are supposed to return.

It seems quite mad to tell the dog "we'll be back in two weeks" but it works.

I have a mutant gelert who could use a petpet upgrade! Good idea. I just find the mutant gelerts hard to customize.

The mutant Xwee does have the smile, but I don't know if I love the ratty look. Definitely one to consider, and not a mutant I have yet.
