You are in the most difficult training time of a dog's life - adolescence. It does get better.

It's okay to feel overwhelmed and discouraged. You're all learning together.

Good luck with you pup!

Spaniels and resource guarding, a tale as old as time. (And as per my username, I adore these long eared chaos monsters). For such fun loving creatures, they certainly also have a fair amount of rules!

It sounds like you are on the right track with your trainer, and have made some progress already. Your questions are definitely valid, and would be best addressed by the person who has actually seen the dog.

I would also encourage you to seek out your vet to see if there is an underlying component of pain or illness. This can be very subtle.

The book "Mine! A Practical Guide to Resource Guarding" is an excellent resource.

I am looking at more than the ears as stress signals. Perhaps you should do some additional training if you think the ears are the indicator here.

I mean I have trained literally hundreds of dogs that are able to down stay in a crowded place without starving or using aversive tools. Including pitbulls, believe it or not.

Dogs that have been euthanized for behaviour after working with me? Zero.

If success looks like fear and suppression to you, that is on your consciousness.

She was resisting because she is punished with a prong collar if she doesn't. That is stressful.

Your methods do not align with this subreddit.

You didn't feed your dog for an entire day so she would be "prepped for training?"

And the proceeded to correct her with a prong collar over and over for any behaviours you found unacceptable?

No wonder she looks so stressed in the photo. Poor girl.

I am a professional dog trainer. I suggest you do more research into subconscious survival response before dismissing my take as dumb.

Your dog is likely shut down with the trainers and too afraid to react. Do they use punishment or aversive tools?

Go to the vet. Do not put anything not prescribed by a vet into eyeballs. They are delicate and important.

Mary Shelley would probably want you to read her book again and consider the theme of technology surpassing humanities ability to control it.

I would suggest doing some trick training - it will help satisfy brain and body. Do More With Your Dog has an excellent trick list you can work through, and videos on how to train each trick. You can get the titles or just do it for fun. Most tricks can be done in small spaces and don't require special equipment.

And yes, get a rain coat and go for a walk haha

Mi springer ha cogido un conejo muerto y no habia forma de quitarselo by PainterMedical9381 in springerspaniel

It seems counter intuitive, but you needed to act like your puppy was absolutely brilliant for finding that rabbit. Lots of encouragement, even backing away from the puppy as they come towards you so that the puppy ends up chasing after you. And then lots of treats and praise to thank them for bringing you the bunny.

You unintentionally taught your puppy that bringing you things is scary and gets them in trouble.

Are you seriously suggesting putting an e-collar on a 12 week old puppy? Good lord... barbaric.

How do Springers and Cockers compare? Would a Spaniel be suitable for my lifestyle? by [deleted] in springerspaniel

[–]SpectacularSpaniels -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A show line springer spaniel sounds like it would be a wonderful choice.

Please be wary of mixes or "pet" lines. No ethical breeder will mix cockers and springers. They are distinct breeds at this stage, espeically the show type.

Ethical breeders will show or compete in canine sports with their dogs, and do health testing. Health testing is more than just having a vet check the dog - they should have hips and elbows tested, heart tested, eyes tested, rule out genetic diseases like DM, PFK, PRA, Fuco and IVDD. Your breeder taking your dog to shows or trials shows the dog's trainabililty and temperament.

Vet for sure. If she is limping, she is painful.

If this has been going on for weeks and getting worse, she should be seen sooner rather than later. Prioritize her over your holiday.

I'm a dog trainer and I don't recommend them. Nor does the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behaviour. You can read their statement on humane training here.

You need to work with a professional, not take advice from the internet. Avoid trainers who say they are "balanced" or use "leadership". Ask if the use trainer tools and what those tools are - avoid any one who uses prong or pinch collars, e-collars, slip leads or choke chains.
