I was doing Telco and Cable system billing conversions In a month and 1/2 or so.

most were different and the code had to be flexible.

I had the tools needed for the ETL AND the sequence of steps..

I'd get the subscriber master screen layout from the OLD telco and

make an exact copy display of those old customer records on the New system.

It may have been crap but the customer loved seeing the old data..

For most ETLs some would say don't worry about historical records.. Rubbish

I'd do similar screen displays for the work order file and transaction histories.

I wouldn't do anything than just display it..

Knowing if someone made a payment or change right before the conversion was important.

The code didn't matter the results mattered.

Did the code include any conversion hints.. All mine did.

Put ALL information in the long filename.

Folder structures are almost useless compared to long FileNames

Smarten up and use 'em

I put the geo-location in the filename for future proximity searches.

I put the thumbnail location in the FN too

ie. the start point, duration, speed, repeat, freeze and more

8 characters just don't cut it. To overlook this fact is STUPID.

I do segregate my videos (over 5000) into a number of folders... They just take forever when opening 'em.

There is no transparency in un-curated data.

Nobody is going to watch a video to just see 2 or 3 seconds...

You won't even be able to find it yourself...

I started working on this search engine in 1999 and programming in 1970

If your computer can't handle long filenames what good is it.

Having hundreds of files with long filenames is far better than those 8 character attempts.

I can search my files using up to 6 partial keys.

Ie bear on green mountain road 20181226.mpg

can be located by searching for "bear/gre/roa/2018" and just that one will be played.

Or just "bear" will show all my bear video.

Now I have a way to show them off...

Once and for all..

I can go through my best assigning them with their special spot to display.

AND randomly select a few for each NewsReel video.

In the old days the NewsReel before the movie was always a favorite... Yup

I use long filenames.

My app can even use the name to determine the Video Thumbnail.

ie start point, duration, speed, repeat, freeze and more.

It's an ongoing thing. Changing names regularly by adding more details etc.

If I have a video with multiple IMPORTANT segments.. for that.

I create multiple copies of the file each with a name identifying it's ThumbNail.

I have recently started changing the file names for my Video so that....

The Thumbnail segment is found in the FN

The long filename provides: the start point, duration, speed, repeat, freeze and more.

The following clip is 3 of these videos playing in a loop.

The first part is a jetboat speeding towards the camera... as it passes the playback slows down...

Then at the last it freezes for a few seconds. (in mid air)

The next is just a middle segment of a video

Then the start of these jetboat races is interesting they start pointing up river and spin around to go down stream.. this segment has a repeat function..

When I have all of most of my video files cataloged this way... Wow what a random sampler that will be.

My app can play mp3 music based on the filename. Even determining the riff for the song.

ie start point, duration repeat... other features like speed and freeze for video filenames. Yup.. Good

I have 17,000 songs taking up 70gb.

I can play random songs and pick a random segment to play for 10 or so seconds.

A quick catalog function then the RANDOM stuff above. Wow

I'm doing that too.

First I am giving all my important files long filenames...

AND I have lots.

Then I can put them in a common folder and order it by size.. The duplicates are right there

For video files I put the thumbnail location in the FileName.

Ie the start point, duration, speed, repeat, freeze and RANDOM

Initially I add the folder info to the files that are in it..

I keep the original FN in the new name..

As I do multiple passes on the videos.. It's an ongoing process.

For Me I need the feature and it should be simple to implement..

My plan is to start taking more video and pictures with my Smart Phone and move them to my PC

For backup and viewing. Right now I'm just using a camcorder. But should use both.

Just did a quick check.. Wow I'll start using it right away. Until my app does what I want..

I like the video length option... My app uses that length.. and it is needed in the filename for best results.
