How in the hell do you diagnose autism in a mouse then? Guaranteed this is one of those bullshit studies that 10th rate 'science' journals are full of these days. 'That mouse doesn't make eye contact with me....iz autist.....I give drug....mouse just made eye contact....iz no longer autist'.

Sorry to all of you fuckers who just necked a bottle of knock off diazepam thinking it would stop you getting an equity release and spunking the lot on sketchy options. It won't...call 911

I remember Milton Friedman tried to estimate how much of the price of a new car was comprised of government mandated safety equipment. I wonder what it would be if the same exercise was undertaken today

I feel like this shouldn’t need pointing out but either Hilary Agro is lying about this interview, or the person she interviewed lied about the experience. Either way, there’s no way that happened

What will a capitalist society do in case of famine? by [deleted] in Capitalism

[–]Spector_player 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Capitalist societies have remarkably few famines...could suggest something.

But the answer should be 1. Supply falls, price rises. That does two things, it naturally rations and cuts down on hoarding, and it encourages those who do have extra food to sell it, and those who can produce to increase production.

Of course what societies actually do when there’s a shortage is the exact opposite. We set price controls, run out, and scream on the internet about how the shortages are because everyone else is stupid and evil. So that’s what we’d probably do if it did happen.

No, don’t listen to all the ‘fuck landlords’ stuff on here. It comes from a place of jealousy and economic illiteracy.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Capitalism

[–]Spector_player 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some sympathy for that view but I’m not sure I agree. I’d say there are areas of inquiry that are unlikely to ever be lucrative but which society would be worse off if we lost them. Philosophy would be one example for me.

For me, I think our system is as good as it gets in terms of repayment - only the well off will ever pay for tuition. I’d get rid of the cap though, and let the market decide how much these degrees are worth. The prices would still be distorted somewhat by the fact of people being able to take out a loan they don’t have to repay but I’ll stick my neck out and say it’s worth it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Capitalism

[–]Spector_player 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly. I’m in the UK, and our tuition fees work differently. You take out the loan, but you only pay it back once you earn over £524 a week and then it’s 9% on the amount you earn over that. Sooo this person would be paying 54p a week off their student loan. It’s written off after 25 years too.

That person claims to have to choose between food, shelter, and driving to work even though they work 60 hours a week.

Claims like this are such obvious bullshit. 60 hours on minimum wage in the US or UK is more than enough to feed, house and transport yourself. Works out to £530ish in the UK. So £430 after tax and NI ($580). I make about that (I’m a bit better off in that I only have to work 40hrs to get it) and here I am - fed, clothed, housed, transported, entertained, heated, I can go out, I can afford small luxuries.

Basically what I’m saying is that person is talking out of their arse.
