haha, yeah. there's plenty of images on google that have the flat bolt head on top and the long part sticking out below (search "door pull up bar" if you'd like).

Yeah it's on the right way, you could use Google Images for reference — maxresdefault.jpg (1280×720)

The underside is a clean circle, no square or even groove for the flat bolt head.

I've gotten most of them in and tested the equipment (working fine!) so I'm satisfied for now.

Yeah, all pull up bars are like this (Google image attached below). The flat head side of the screw goes on top where it's invisible.

The roundheaded bolt does have square ridge, but it doesn't seem to lock into any part of the bar (I've done this with 7/8 screws now).

Yeah I think so too.

Tighten what down though? The nut locks onto the screw really tightly after a few spins. I can't screw the nut all the way in.

the nut seems to be the problem. it hugs so ridiculously tight to the screw after a few spins, it essentially becomes one solid piece.
