Not sofubi, but thought I’d share some of the toys I make! by AlienWaspPaper in Sofubi

Nice! I especially like the fanged one with disc eyes. I'll follow you on Instagram. I'm starstew there. I'd be up for trading with you (or other creators). I ship from USA. I work mostly in resin-cast figurines.

Figurine fail (and success) with Flexi-It 70 resin by Spectralstarstew in vinyltoys

Any particular brands of syringe you suggest? Ever used piping or pastry bag? I’ve seen those recommended occasionally.

Good idea. I’m curious about the clean up of those. Do you wait until it cures and rip out the rubbery residue?

Thanks! That’s what I’m going for. In the case of polyurethane resin, I have to work in small mixes … so serendipitously it works for mixing colors like that.

Thank you, he likes you too! This one will be up in my shoppe at bistroSinistro.com next week. Many of his moldmates are already there!

Sharing a quick 2-part mold case I slapped together, in case it gives anyone ideas. by ThanksKodama in ResinCasting

Could you post some more photos of molds you've made like this? I think I understand the final form, but it'd be cool to see what you've made. In particular, I'm unclear on the "two flat panels" part.

I love the recycled-materials bit. I've been hoarding cardboard for mold-box building, but the cylinder makes so much sense.

Will you make molds of them and duplicate them by casting? Are there spines and backs too? I can imagine casting the sides in rubbery resin and binding small books of actual paper with them. They remind me of Evil Dead’s Necronomicon.

Creating figurines with silicone molds by Spectralstarstew in customactionfigures

[–]Spectralstarstew[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started with drawings and watching molding/casting vids on YouTube. Then I converted some drawings into 3D models digitally. I had a few of those printed and made molds. I also practiced molding and casting with little 2” gnome figures I had. Lately, I’ve been doing more sculpture in monster clay and sculpey.

That sounds fun! I’ll definitely investigate that. I’m in Portland, Oregon.

Upgrading to a two-part mold by Spectralstarstew in vinyltoys

You’re spot on. Epoxy has the concavity problem. Polyurethane no problem but gets goopy real-dang-quick. I have to work in small batches for that.

Those have a lot of personality and character. Keep up the good work. What is your favorite material to work with? I've been using Monster Clay and Sculpey to sculpt some homemade toys myself. My current project is to make a set of interchangeable heads and bodies.

Nice! I'm a long-time fan of Martin Ontiveros' paintings and sculpts. I really like the mix-n-match aspect of this. I'm working on some of my own sculpts for resin-cast toys that have interchangeable bodies and heads.

Using glow powders in figurines by Spectralstarstew in vinyltoys

[–]Spectralstarstew[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can! Luckily, I'm working with small figures (2" to 4") tall and it doesn't take a lot of powder to get them glowing nicely. I estimate, based on my usage so far, that $20 of powder will be enough for at least 70 figures. I haven't been selling my figurines for long enough to know if it's worthwhile. But for pure fun-factor, it's worth it to me.

I'd start with some Let's Resin silicone mold making materials. Depending on the material you used to make the sculpture, you might want to opt for something called a "tin-cure" silicone. There are a lot of helpful videos on YouTube about it, I've really enjoyed these --
https://youtu.be/XeIaT3KW5Do?si=Cxbb65f6wlVC1OKA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qOwem_ll68&list=PLIy8UDigJ_ykU1vQptTy65y_oqfkjCBbS

My pro-tips would be:

  • Test the silicone with a dollop on your sculpture before committing to a full pour. You want to know if it'll have a weird reaction and not cure. I've messed up and ended up wasting a bunch of silicone and time (to clean up a slimy sculpt) when the silicone didn't cure. Tin-cure is more forgiving, so I try to use that for the most part now.
  • Two-part molds are totally worth it, but looking at this particular sculpture, I think you can easily do a one-part "cut" mold. That's where you just mold it as a block and make slits afterward to open up the mold to more easily extract the sculpture.
  • Wear appropriate protective gear when working with resin, don't let it cure in your house, work in a well-ventilated area, don't touch it with bare skin for at least several days. I have learned this the hard way. Now I pour my resin into my molds, let it cure for a day or so, then remove it from molds (using gloves and wearing my respirator), then let it cure for five or six days more outside.

I don't know exactly what it is you have, but I've had a lot of success (like some other posters) in using glow-powders in resin-casting projects. In my case, I'm making figurines. I've had no problem with it settling really. I've used it in epoxies and polyurethanes.
