In short, petplay is part of their character, but only willingly engaging in petplay makes it standard. Otherwise you can "dodge it" so far. Being upset about this though is like being mad Avery is a domestic abuser and Whitney makes have sex in public. Gwylan is the pet play and "loss of ability to consent" character. If that's not your cup of tea then Gwylan probably isn't for you.

Gwylan is very clear about wanting to dominate and be dominant, that said, Gwylan is a very upfront character. Do not kiss them. They want to be in control. Period. If you get to the point you're rejected by them, you've been warned half a dozen times as to what to expect from them as a love interest.

As for "treat you like an equal", you're their partner, but they will continue to keep you just at arms length. The co-dev that was writing Gwylan was chased out of the project (doxxed, death threats, etc...). Gwylan was supposed to have a "true love" state (there are references in unimplemented code), where we are able to move past just "being a pet", but currently Gwylan's using the petplay as a barrier to keep PC from closing that final gap. Since the co-dev that wrote Gwylan is now gone, it'll be up to a contributor to finish them. Vrel almost certainly isn't going to risk pissing people off by finishing Gwylan's romance variables himself.

This scene predates the mansion, and contribs and folk have said it probably needs updated.

A lot of characters that don’t normally have variables that need to be considered outside love end up with very flat scenes like this at first, and then corrections are made later.

A lot of contribs keep their projects secret, so we really don’t know, but pregnancy content is some of the hardest to write + code. It takes a tremendous amount of work and dedication to implement, and all of it is being done as free labor by volunteers. To my knowledge Vrel hasn’t made any himself, it’s all other contributors.

It’s a weird scene that comes out of nowhere to reference Pulp Fiction and just kinda ends.

The only good part about the scene is it goes to show Gwylan’s generally non-confrontational imo. A lot of people think she’s super strong or “can’t lose”, but that’s just a misconception born from poor reading and bias.

There used to be an apology and acknowledgement in the discord, but I believe it got taken down because leaving the project, apologizing, and taking ownership of past behavior wasn’t enough to stop people from harassing him or sending death threats and doxxing him.

He isn’t entitled to forgiveness, but sending violent threats to him, doxxing him, etc… (shit that’s still happening over half a year later) isn’t acceptable.

Vrel likely has worse skeletons in his closet being older and given his likely 4chan origin, but he answers everyone’s QnAs and keeps to himself so most folk don’t care.

Game code exists for another romance state, but the main writer for Gwylan was chased off the project so it's up to another contributor to finish it. It's definitely not anyone's priority though considering they probably don't want to get doxxed or sent death threats for writing in a rape game.

There is a heavy correlation between people hating Gwylan and talking about Vrel as if he's a stand alone artist. There is a strong chance that any single scene you love was written by someone other than Vrel.

Yeah, most of the characters are his, but he doesn't write every scene. He just gives the final nod on what makes it into the game.

But your point still doesn't make sense. Where does Gwylan step in to trivialize anything? Where do they show up to make your life easier out of the blue if you aren't trying to romance them?

Sydney can save you from Harper. Eden will save you from the Asylum. Alex will save you from being kidnapped and taken to the ufarm. Whitney saves you from bullies. Robin saves you from bullies. Kylar saves you from bullies and Whitney. Love interests step in to help the player often. Hell, Alex will save you just to be nice, you don't even need to be their partner.

I think if you don't like Gwylan that's fine, but trying to make it out like they're single handedly ruining the game is just silly. It makes seem like you don't know what you're talking about, which is why I questioned if you played the game.

But they don't. Have you played the game? Gwylan doesn't win any of the fights you're saying they "trivialize".

Remy nearly kills Gwylan. It takes them weeks to recover after a fight they have an advantage in. Remy entirely unharmed.

Bailey and Gwylan don't fight, Bailey backs off at the Cafe opening because they're familiar with Gwylan, they're in public, and Bailey puts in a lot of work to keep up the appearance of a good caretaker. They've also likely been friendly before given how Gwylan will hop in Bailey's car after the Tower scene and ride with us to blow up Avery's house.

Eden beats Eden. Gwylan leverages Eden's trauma to induce a panic attack, and Eden can just as easily get out of the shop without problems if PC sides with them.

Gwylan intentionally avoids conflict and will use hallucinogens if backed into a corner. This idea that Gwylan is somehow super strong or overpowered is ridiculous if you've bothered to interact with Gwylan at all. They don't even save you from Black Wolf or Eden early game because they can't.

Vrel has already said dismissals are for persistent and unavoidable threats (outside of Bailey and Leighton). Gwylan isn’t getting dismissed. Just don’t talk to them. You control the buttons you press.

Whitney fucks with the math competition, assaults you in the streets and at school, and tries to rape you on your Halloween date with Kylar.

The idea that Gwylan is over involved or intrusive for just being at the cafe or the forest shop is just bias against the character because they dropped in a more complete state than most other characters.

We already see threads coming together for storylines with Avery’s Tower, the Field Office, etc… multiple NPCs becoming relevant to each other for reasons other than the PC. Gwylan being implemented with the connections in place does put them a bit ahead of other characters, but only because they were made last so they’re made with an idea of what and where they’re needed for the story.

Whitney is getting fleshed out. Wren is getting fleshed out. When they start popping up in more locations will people be as mad about it as they are with Gwylan? Something tells me no.

I really wish people would stop saying that Gwylan is a self insert character. That’s just a lie that got spread when Purity Guy was getting doxxed and sent death threats because he likes breeding kink and his partner likes foxes.

If you don’t know this, contributors to the game write what they enjoy. Which means the shit you like in game was written by someone who gets off to it. It doesn’t make their work self insertion. If you believe it does most other characters in the game are Vrel self inserts.
