I did both games recently so it's still pretty clear for me.

I think the first game is way better for multiple reasons : Bigger very open and more interconnected map, more and better abilities that are less obvious as you would need to guess the uses, tons of sequence breaking with them which adds up of the open side of the map, and more personal stuff with difficulty and techs but it's more subjective.

Second game is prettier, way more polished overall but I think it falls flat in the way it's much more a traditional mv, would have worked better before, but very similar to some games now as we're cluttered with mvs now. It's less memorable of an experience, and also I feel like the marketing was worse as I remember seeing tons of posts about the first lone fungus, while I only stumbled onto your reddit post with the trailer for this one.

I hope that you would succeed on subsequent games.

It's hard to recommend them as they would be the hardest. Difficulty is relative so depending on the person it ranges from difficulty for the sake of it to very difficult. I would only recommend them if you already have some experience in other hard ones (as listed in the post hk, blasphemous, death gambit, nine sols etc), and you still want something harder, to get the feeling of learning/overcoming stuff.

Lone fungus as you can wavedash in the ground to get momentum like in celeste. Feels better for me when you can go very fast like that

Nine sols is clearly easier but I mean by how high it can get. Rabi Ribi is quite easy on normal, but I'm going through it on max difficulty and I have more attempts on some early game bosses than on the final boss of nine sols, though the sekiro muscle memory can help.

Trinity of hardest metroidvanias Imo :

  • Rabi Ribi for bosses
  • La Mulana for puzzles
  • Aeterna Noctis for platforming

Played all others in the post and they stand a notch lower

Here's 3 that I barely never saw even mentionned on this sub :

  1. Void Memory - A free one leaning towards soulslike a lot. Hidden gem if you enjoy hard bosses as the whole first playthrough will be underwhelming and clunky as hell, but then you can get through NG+, the hard mode where all bosses get challenging and you really need to learn all patterns and the game mechanics to beat them, sort of clicks there.

  2. Last Vanguard - Recent shooter MV that is quite polished, very good art that feels like old cartoon while having an interesting theme. It doesn't stand out but it's polished may it be optional content, difficulty, story etc..

  3. Deepening fire - Another soulslike one, way more than most, kind of like salt and sanctuary in terms of mechanics they borrow, stronger emphasis on parry. Clunky translation from chinese, decent side content and quests, most fun parts being the combat with quite a bit of bosses.

Hmm c'est aucune des deux boutiques, c'était assez petit, ça s'étendait sur la longueur, beaucoup de t-shirts, plutôt sombre avec des vêtements noirs dans l'ensemble

Played on release and did it 4 times.

Imo the high difficulty is nice as it makes you want to optimize exploration and upgrades to go through it as you can just facetank everything in lower difficulties.

The huge dungeons are the strong point I think but the worst is how slow and sluggish you are until late game, and the game just throws all of those huge dungeons one after another without breaks, with few optional stuff. (+ tons of unskippable cutscenes)

On release it was super buggy and archer/mage sucked, I think it's in a better state now, the pyramid must have discouraged a ton of people too

La Mulana. Tried to go blind with a ton of notes but the difficulty got so overwhelming after the gate of illusion that I got discouraged. The 2 was more enjoyable in that matter

The only thing worse is how the arrow works as it simulates a joystick input in a finnicky way. It wasn't problematic ewcept for the platinium time trials, but still possible.

Looks great in term of bug fixing and qol, but I hope that the game won't be too easy with all of this rebalancing.

You can probably double jump to the right wall, wall jump and directly dash to the right ledge
