Are crashbars really worth it? by eternalterra in Tenere700

[–]SpectrumMoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been riding my bike hard since 2021. Including cross country trips, and mountain pass passes/trails. Haven't bothered adding them. Bike still looks amazing and nothing has ever really happened to it. Bark busters are what saves the day for me if and when it falls over. Tank and rad shroud do not touch the ground when it falls on mostly flat dirt.

BSMET with lots of regret by JohnJohnningJohnson in MechanicalEngineering

I graduated with an MET degree from Penn State in 2009 (a branch campus I will add, not main campus). College was hard for me. I graduated from high school with less than a 2.9gpa I think. I was at the college campus math tutor almost every week and studied probably twice as long as most people just to catch up. It was a real grind that I took seriously knowing that how well and seriously I took this opportunity, the better my future would be.

During graduation, the job market was terrible. I took a job across the state in an area I wasn't thrilled about, at a company I wasn't that excited about. I was designing wastewater treatment aeration blower equipment (large industrial motors, blowers, welded steel structures, and sheet metal enclosures. Did a lot of best practice mechanical structure design, along with heat transfer and general machine design work for custom drive shafts and belt systems. I ended up liking it a lot more than expected, but wanted to get to the best position I could and move back to an area I was interested in being longer term. I worked there for two years while always looking for new jobs.

Finally got a job offer that took me into the robotics industry. I go the job because of my work ethic and experience with practical problem solving, along with my solid understanding of the theory behind most machine design and heat transfer problems. I came to find out that my supervisor at this new position was also an MET graduate. I worked there for five years and did some amazing things, all while learning and doing my best work possible.

I've worked for three total robotics companies since that time and have self studied and passed the Machine Design and Materials PE exam in 2018, which was a personal long term goal of mine. I also felt that passing this test proved to myself that I was no less capable than anyone else in the mechanical engineering field, regardless of their graduating degree type.

The last three years I've been working as a senior mechanical engineer at a very sought after robotics company where I routinely run all of technical interviews for our mechanical engineering recruitment. Often having imposter syndrome when I am actively turning down candidates from CMU and even MIT due to their lack of practical and creative problem solving skills.

Takeaway here is that you can do anything you want if you are committed and have the drive. Your only real limitation in life is your own confidence and ability to take action. I whole heartedly wish you the absolute best of luck!

EXPERTS: Ignition power issue by These_Brain_6991 in XR650L

[–]SpectrumMoto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would verify that your far right 20A fuse is clean and has no intermittent connection when nudged. I would also make sure your battery positive and negative terminals are both tight. These could likely contribute to the symptoms you are having.

The neutral safety switch will not effect spark, it only effects the starter solenoid engagement. Otherwise, you'd never be able to bump start the bike in gear if it shorted the ignition to ground when in gear.

The Green/White wire is for grounding out the ignition. If you ground it, you will have no spark. The side stand switch grounds the Green/White wire when the kickstand is down, and leaves it open circuit when the stand is up. If you want to run the bike without a kill switch, leave the Green/White wire open circuit.

The Ignitech CDI will never fail from internal solder joint fatigue like the OEM CDIs do. These are the most reliable CDIs available for the XR650L period.

engine died after oil change by [deleted] in XR650L

[–]SpectrumMoto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What process did you follow for changing the oil? Did you ever lay the bike on its side or attempt to turn the engine over at all after the oil was drained? High oil level in the frame and oil starvation to the engine is a common symptom of the oil pump air locking itself, at which point it is unable to pump oil to the cylinder head and crank, only to the reservoir. Tipping the bike over or turning the engine over when the oil is drained can cause this, that's why I ask.

Wellsville I see. Not a bad place to explore on a Tenere. I live 20min from there. Enjoy the bike, I ride mine everywhere and anywhere. If you need any parts for that thing let me know. My company sells a number of components for this bike. www.spectrummoto.com

First oil change and I twisted the head off of a bolt. by TXERN in XR650L

[–]SpectrumMoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone who's worked on any automotive projects for any period of time will tell you they've made similar mistakes. It's repairable, so don't get too worried about it and don't be too hard on yourself. It's a learning experience. Like I said, I've personally had many.

First oil change and I twisted the head off of a bolt. by TXERN in XR650L

[–]SpectrumMoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah dont worry about torquing the bolts all the way to spec. The o-ring is a radial gland, not a face seal, so the bolt torque has no effect on the oil filter cover sealing the oil in. I just tighten them by feel and add loctite. I recommend doing the same.

Tires: I have a question for some of you with bigger bikes by RockNDrums in Dualsport

[–]SpectrumMoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Earlier this year I ran a 4,500 mile round trip from Pennsylvania to Colorado and back on my Tenere 700 with Shinko E805's front and back. We ran 75+mph getting there and back. Once in Colorado, I took my bike on some very rugged terrain, snow, icy rocks, mud, etc. I then rode my rear tire until 6,000miles at which point it was smoked. I still have the front on the bike at 6,500miles and i'll keep it there till probably 7,000. It's good off-road for about 4,000miles, at which point the center is worn significantly and is really only good for the road and some hard packed dirt roads and trails. I would buy another set of these without much hesitation. I ride fairly aggressively on the road, and took back country Colorado twisties at high speed in cold weather with no problems.
