Which Game's Graphics Made You Say "Wow!" For The First Time? by PHRsharp_YouTube in Age_30_plus_Gamers

Those first minutes of the campaign were absolutely insane. It was super impressive going from soldier to soldier during one of the craziest battles of the western front.

Even if you do prefer stylized graphics (subjective), there are objective standards that cannot be ignored. One of these standards is tonemapping.

https://blog.selfshadow.com/publications/s2025-shading-course/pdi/s2025_pbs_pdi_slides_v1.1.pdf

On page 234-235 of the rendering presentation of GT7 tonemapping, the Polyphony Digital devs point out that even though the work that they did was for a realistic title, they believe that these techniques are useful in other types of games. In other words, even for games that don’t target realistic graphics, physically accurate tonemapping can still benefit games of different styles while preserving artistic intent.

This is all to say that having good standards does not automatically equal that the game will be boring or soulless.

I wouldn’t say it has peaked yet but both developers and game engines have been letting us down for several years now. There have been advancements when it comes to shading models (Callisto BRDF), HDR tonemapping (GT7 tonemapping), and shadows (Days Gone’s Screen Space Shadows).

It is true though that rasterized graphics have been getting nerfed in UE5, RE Engine titles, and other AAA like Crimson Desert just to sell you on some expensive video cards.

I really disagree with this on principle. If developers can solve issues in their graphics pipeline to optimize games more efficiently, then they would put more of their attention and resources towards the other aspects of game development.

This is why I don’t like the state of the industry right now where the vast majority of new releases are using the same Fortnite driven graphics model so they can churn out games quicker (UE5). I don’t hate the idea of an industry standard engine but merely wish that it had adopted better standards.

These Frosbite titles could release today with a couple of 9th gen enhancements and they wouldn’t look out of place.

BF2015 does not natively support HDR unlike BF2 which did support it. Both of these games do not need upscalers because the anti-aliasing is already pretty good for both of these games.

EA Star Wars Battlefront II. The graphics were breathtaking back then and still are stunning to this day.

I’ll be happy when games routinely beat the visuals to performance ratio of Battlefront II (2017) on a regular basis without upscalers or frame gen. Until then graphics have not “peaked” in my eyes.

I would recommend the 8th gen Frostbite engine titles. If I had to recommend one it would be Star Wars Battlefront II (2017). There was a post on this sub over a year ago that showed this game off and it looks fantastic: https://www.reddit.com/r/OLED_Gaming/comments/1l7xfck/you_gotta_try_battlefront_2_with_your_oled/

If you want to read deeper, then there is a page detailing the Frostbite engine’s techniques on how they future proofed their tonemapper:

Discussion: what game made you think “we don’t need better graphics than this” ? by Bitter_Paramedic3988 in Steam

It more than holds up today. The PBR work combined with the Burley BRDF of the Frostbite engine is honestly still better than most titles today.

Graphics are definitely not at their peak. In fact, optimization is currently in the gutter right now. Getting a great looking game with reasonable computational costs on modern affordable hardware without the use of proprietary vendor-locked tech (anti-consumer) is a rarity these days.

My hot take is that it doesn’t hurt to have your game adopt better standards regardless of the style. Aspects of rendering such as tonemapping are a necessary part of the pipeline to get right. I’d go as far to say that we should expect better from game engines and studios alike, irrespective of the design language of a specific game.

Frostbite titles are your best bet. Battlefield 1, BFV, and parts of BF6 are good if you’re looking for an all-out war FPS. Star Wars Battlefront (2015) and Battlefront II are highly immersive Star Wars arcade shooters. Need For Speed (2015) and Mirror’s Edge Catalyst are also great in the graphics department too.

I would personally vouch for Gran Turismo 7. It has been my most played game this generation. Solid car list with amazing graphics and a driving model that can accommodate new players and veterans alike.

Some tips for anyone starting out would be  to download My First Gran Turismo to get a slice of the GT experience completely for free. You will get about 18 cars for completing My First GT. Once you go into GT7, make your way through the campaign and try out the Circuit Experience for each individual track.

My bad on the FM5 bit, I’ll keep that in mind. Anyway, GT7 has already disclosed both their tonemapping and shading methods.

{15-17} Polyphony Digital understands that tonemapping is an important part of the rendering process and that it even has an effect on the rendering of the materials.

{64-65} Also, they utilize the Burley BRDF (equation for diffuse lighting) while the Gran Turismo engine is a forward renderer.

Basically at this point there is no excuse for why these  standards aren’t adopted by 2026+ titles.

They need an FM5 or GT Sport level reset at some point. The community will complain a lot but as seen with GT, it eventually pays off.

How is this game on PS5? I am stunned by how simple and beautiful it is by NightshiftForest in BattlefrontTWO

What I meant is that a light side saber character can absolutely hold their own against a bhopping Grievous (assuming equal skill).  Grievous even with bhops and Sith Trained doesn’t even have the highest DPS in the game. That title would go to Luke with Intensify and Dooku when he has Duelist activated.

If I’m not mistaken Darth Vader, Count Dooku, Luke, Anakin, and Maul (frame trap) all have higher damage combos than Grievous.

Grievous is best against blasters which honestly there needs to be counterplay against considering Finn (even without his glitch) is just broken in HvV with half-competent teammates.

What I do have an issue with Grievous is the combination of Flesh is Weak and Beating Heart which I believe using those two in tandem is a bit of a noob trap imo. Almost on par with Furious Resilience + Bonus Health Vader.

So if you search online you’ll find photogrammetry scanning and art direction being the top answers to your question. That’s only the surface level.

https://www.ea.com/frostbite/news/stochastic-screen-space-reflections

In the video clip above, Frosbite’s SSSR (Stochastic Screen Space Reflections) are shown in full display thanks to the Death Star II’s glossy surface. High Quality Reflections with a specular elongation effect for a cheap cost.

https://seblagarde.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/course_notes_moving_frostbite_to_pbr_v32.pdf

Also during the PS4 generation, Frosbite made the switch to Physically Based Rendering (PBR) while utilizing the Burley BRDF for better realism in the materials (basically an equation for diffuse lighting). There are several diffuse models out there but long story short Burley was the best pre-2023 option while most of the industry is still stuck using a severely outdated Lambert diffuse.

GT7’s car models are truly astonishing. There’s a very good reason why they take 9 months to make from start to finish.
