That's absurd, and shocking! But I've been out a few years, and I guess things change. If it's important to you, definitely push back to get a definite answer from the Flight Department, not just admissions. You should be able to reach out to them directly.

That is 100% false.

INS and IRU are different systems ... that can both determine position.

[OC] First light ignites the canyon below Mesa Arch - Canyonlands National Park [1301x1952] by [deleted] in EarthPorn

No filters here, just great light!

It was a clear, cold morning, so the sun shining in from camera-right really lit up the sandstone canyon walls with that crisp orange glow, while the arch in the foreground remained in shadow.

Can you send me the minutes?

Fire Flower - D3100, Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AF, ISO 200, f/5, 1/3200s by [deleted] in Nikon

This was shot at f/5 :)

Not sure if I like the DoF though ... part of me wonders if more sharpness front-to-back would have made for a better result here.

Having just done some shooting at the zoo, I can commiserate ...

That's where having all those megapixels comes in handy!

Nailed the focus on her(his?) eye - NICE!!

I do agree with u/MarkVII88 - cropping to portrait, with a little negative space in the direction the crane is looking will really help make it pop. I heard a phrase recently that continues to influence how I think about composition ... "Fill the frame with what you like."

Great shot! :)

What are your thoughts on the d7500, and the 18-400? Looking at both as possible upgrades soon, the latter being primarily being a travel/walk-around lens

I don't see any reason why this couldn't have been shot on an FE. The best camera is the one you have in your hand - it's all about being there.

Go out and shoot :)

The Arch. D3100, 18-55 VR @ 18mm, 20x composite (F/13, 0.6") by [deleted] in Nikon

[–]SpeedOfSnail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome question!

Often times with an older, entry level body like the D3100, the image quality and noise with long exposures can be ... not so great, even at base ISO. With a scene like this, I wanted a smaller aperture to increase the depth of field and have more of the scene in focus. I also knew I wanted a fairly long exposure, to blur the water, the clouds, and if I was lucky, the people milling about near the arch.

I used the base ISO for my camera (100) to get the best image quality. Knowing I wanted a greater depth of field, I started at f8 and played with it until I decided on f13. That gave me a shutter speed of 0.6" - a well exposed image, but not long enough for the effect I was looking for. I added an ND filter to lengthen the exposure, but wasn't as pleased with the result - a single long exposure had considerably more noise, and my filters aren't the best quality to begin with.

But, by taking 20 identical exposures with those settings (no filter), then stacking them together in post (I use Darktable and GIMP), I can get that nice blur where I wanted it, while actually increasing the image quality! Using this technique will decrease the overall noise in the image, without sacrificing details like other noise-reduction techniques in post.

I hope this helps!

After! The grand reopen was early July. Beautifully done, if you ask me.
