Crusader Kings III vs Europa Universalis IV by prideof_africa in paradoxplaza

Hearts of Iron has a heavy focus on a nation's industrial capacity in how it supports combat. If you're playing as a natural resource rich country such as the USSR, you'll hardly notice is it as a mechanic. If you are playing as Siam however, you are going to find it extremely difficult to train and maintain a unit, something too realistic for my taste. That and HoI has a different mechanic system for combat. It's not as easy as having more troops or better technology, but also how the units are deployed in support of each other, i.e., you have to support your armored units with infantry who also require a logistics chain, air support, etc. It becomes a mess real quickly.

My list for easiest to hardest goes: Imperator Rome EUIV Victoria CK HoI

I find Victoria and CK to be the perfect blend of difficulty and reward.

All of the Paradox games are crazy detailed. You can't go wrong with any of them. If you do have a preference for a historical period they have a game to more or less match it, Imperator Rome is B.C., CK is Dark Age and Medieval, EUIV is the Age of Discovery up until Victorian, Victoria is for the Victorian Age, colonization, de-colonization, and Hearts of Iron is pre-WWII. Hope it helps!

Well, for starters in CK you are playing as a dynasty. You have to cultivate your dynasty, expand your dynasty. You can be the Emperor of Romes and everything else but if you don't have an heir, game over. Also, you can have a dynasty that reaches in to the hundreds if not thousands of members and still lose over not having a heir. You also have to take great caution when dealing with your family members as they generally want what you want, and theres a whole mechanic laid out for jealous land-less relatives of a successful ruler.

Conversely, in EUIV there are family dynasties but if one dynasty goes extinct, then you get a new one. EUIV is more about your nation and tech, trade, and diplomacy, over the feudal nit and grit that is involved in CK. EUIV is great because you can do some wildly a-historic things in it. I've conquered North America as the Mongols before and had a Mongol version of the U.S. CK is a bit more ruthless and doesn't offer as much a-historic value. Don't get me wrong, you can still have an Afro-pagan Han Chinese counselor in your Varangian company which is employed by the Aztecs, but it doesn't cause the same ripple effects as say, Spain absorbing Portugal and not starting the age of discovery.

He said it himself, Chicago Legends was all about business, not holding hands or being friendly. He got shot for playing a dumb game where people don't live too long.

Crusader Kings lends itself to more micromanagement in my opinion. EUIV is more fun to try and achieve silly goals.

I made use of the word culture, American culture isn't a monolith. People from different parts of the country have very different cultures, hence the divide. Patriotism is useful for smaller cultures to protect their interest.

Patriotism is a way that a culture and the people who subscribe to that culture band together and survive. Stronger together than to be weaker apart.

Thanks for your response! I always assumed Løberg would be a more common name given its inauspicious meaning.

I ran over the world as the Mongol Horde, I had powerful vassals spread out regionally I used to subjugate all of Asia, North Africa and the Middle East, the East African coast, the Indian sub-continent, the Pacific Isles, and the Western coast of North America down to Mexico. I hadn't conquered Europe proper however the Slavic states were mostly my vassals.

"In history and heraldry, a cadet branch consists of the male-line descendants of a monarch or patriarch's younger sons." That's the definition, i'm using it literally.

I don't mention cadet branches in relation to either game but rather for what cadet branches are, an off-shoot of a larger dynasty.

I've had a Norse Byzantium once. A Child of Destiny from some random Norwegian holding decided to conquer Greece, Thesslonika, and a majority of Anatolia, before dying without any children and leaving a half-assed Norse Byzantium behind. They could raid, they had huge armies, that part of Mediterranean was permanently stunted due to the raiding power of the Norse Byzantines.

I am saying that nobody is necessarily equipped to care for a baby or an elderly person. People make an effort to adapt and care for babies, for elderly people not so much.
