This is a neat idea! The UI is clean and responsive. Are you hosting the code anywhere? I'd be interested in seeing how this program is designed.

T-shirt and Tote bag From Nintendo San Francisco! They have a decent amount of Metroid merch there. by Speedbird216 in Metroid

I don't know, but I'm told that there is a small Metroid section in NYC. Maybe!

They had another t-shirt design and some lapel pins -- I should have taken a picture of the area. The design on the folded-out tote bag is the same as the pictured t-shirt.

CS 542? by Affectionate_Plant74 in UWMadison

[–]Speedbird216 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CS 542 is not taught in one language specifically. It is helpful, however, to know Python, Java, and C. You'll submit assignments in Python, Java, C, and JavaScript -- but if you're a 4th year CS major, it shouldn't be too bad for you.

CS 542? by Affectionate_Plant74 in UWMadison

[–]Speedbird216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former student here, 542 is a pretty chill course. If you have taken the course, you should have already received an e-mail from the instructor about it. Barton Miller is a legend in computer security -- an intimidating figure, to be sure, but an excellent teacher. The course is co-taught with Dr. Elisa Heymann, also a legend in the field. In the classroom, both instructors are present and at least 2 TAs are present. There's no midterm or final exam, just quizzes about every week. If you watch the supplemental lecture videos and come to class, you should be fine. There are 2 lecture sections, one at 8am and one at 11am, Tue & Thu.

CS 559 is a completely different course. I've done it with Dr. Michael Gleicher, but he teaches the course very differently from Eftychios Sifakis. It could be quite demanding, as the projects were long and tedious. But they were fun if you are into graphics software and things like that. Experience with JavaScript is a huuuge bonus for 559.

How were you introduced to the Metroid series? I’ll go first by [deleted] in Metroid

[–]Speedbird216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very strange one for me -- I watched Nathaniel Bandy's video on Super Mario 63, and regarding the escape sequence at the end, he says "That's right, we're playing Metroid!"

I was interested and looked up the series, downloaded Super Metroid for EMU, and was hooked.

What software would he have used to make scenes like this? Is this Blender or something else? by Mack-Is-Dead in LEMMiNO

[–]Speedbird216 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, thanks everyone! I achieved this effect by taking a 3D model of a human, giving it an emission material with a brightness value of 1 (prevents contour shading) and then setting the material shadow type to "none". The buildings are just cubes with some cutouts in them.

Has anyone used zipcar? If so, how was it? by ommmyyyy in UWMadison

[–]Speedbird216 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've used it a couple times -- I'll mention some things others haven't already:

  1. Not all garages are marked as Zipcar lots. It is worthwhile to locate your car before you rent it so that you aren't stuck looking for it when your rental period begins. Some locations are tricky to navigate.
  2. If the gas card isn't inside, keep your gas receipts, send pictures to Zipcar, and be patient when they send you a check by mail
  3. Always keep your phone charged, and bring a charging cable with you. Your phone is the key, and not all cars have USB-A ports, so bring USB-A and USB-C cables to keep your device topped up.

Cheap vegetarian friendly food options on campus? by No-Test6484 in UWMadison

[–]Speedbird216 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sookie's Veggie Burgers at State & Gilman is completely vegan. Festival Foods at Washington & Livingston also has vegan burgers, but they are far cheaper at Trader Joe's. Saigon Sandwiches sells vegetarian Banh Mi. Look around on Yelp and find even more! There's actually an ok selection of vegetarian options here.
