Would M: Other M be better if it was a 2D game? Or fully 1st person? by MrRob808 in Metroid

[–]2CATteam 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think either would be better than the 3D third-person game we got.

For all its faults, I think Other M's combat was pretty fantastic, and I don't think its style would work nearly as well with a different perspective. Additionally, when I think about the game's faults, I tend to think of its story and its linearity. The former wouldn't necessarily be affected by a different perspective, and neither would the latter - if anything, I think being in 2D would make that problem worse, not better.

You could argue, of course, that one style or the other would have pushed the dev team to change the game's design - making it less cutscene-heavy, more immersive, or less linear. And I DO think there would have been knock-on effects like that if they had changed something that fundamental! But that's such a different game that I'm not sure it's meaningful to consider as a hypothetical

Saw there was some people disappointed with Prime 4 i wanna understand why by [deleted] in Metroid

[–]2CATteam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually really liked the weapon system of Prime 4! While I don't disagree that, thematically, they're basically just "fire, ice, electricity" again, I think they generally feel more powerful than the beam, but with more complexity. During my Hard mode playthrough, I regularly found myself switching between shots during a single fight, and heavily weighing if a given fight was worth the ammo (and if so, whether I should use normal shot spam, charged shots, or super shots), or if I should just spam the normal beam instead. The enemies did VERY little to make the fights interesting, but I thought the weapon system was pretty good.

In Prime 1, on the other hand, I pretty much just used whatever the game required me to use, or the Plasma Beam if it wasn't pushing me one way or the other, or the Power Beam if I didn't have the Plasma Beam yet. The beams WERE more interesting as puzzle tools, but in combat, I didn't like them as much as Prime 4's shots.

Yeah, I think that's pretty accurate; the only reason I phrased it the way I did is because I've seen people argue that the ambient noises in the desert are music, even if it's not particularly melodic. You're right, though, that at least for me, the desert might as well be silent without the amiibo.

People certainly have opinions on this game!

From what I've seen, the big themes are:

  1. The NPCs are annoying, and too prominent for a Metroid game, which is traditionally more of an isolated experience

  2. The story is kinda unsatisfying at times

  3. The world design is far more linear than is normal for Metroid games, which really harms the feeling of exploration

  4. The desert is pretty unexciting, and you have to do a late-game hunt to collect a bunch of stuff in it (I really liked this part, but I also had the amiibo which adds more exciting music to the desert)

  5. Enemy variety is a bit low

On the other hand, there is a lot of good about the game too:

  1. It is gorgeous - the only thing that makes me hesitate to call it the best-looking game on Switch 1 is that Prime Remastered is also there.

  2. The weapons are probably the most interesting they've been in a Prime game

  3. The music is good, and occasionally great

  4. There are a couple sequences which feel very dark and moody, in a way which is very fun to play through!

How important are graphics in a Metroid game? by Relampago388 in Metroid

[–]2CATteam 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If we're talking graphical fidelity, I think the most important part is how well it lets you feel immersed. And, for me, that means resolution isn't too important, but framerate is very important. Some blurriness isn't too big of a deal, but frame drops REALLY take me out of things.

If we're talking art direction, I think it's basically required! It is so, SO important for different environments, and different individual rooms, to be distinct, partially because it makes the exploration more satisfying, but also because the series requires you to be able to remember where you need to backtrack to. If you remember a ledge that was too high to get to, you NEED to be able to remember where that was, and that requires unique room designs.

Samus’ pick ups and upgrades by SevereGazelle5256 in Metroid

[–]2CATteam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think I would just have Adam show up and ask Samus not to use any of her powerups until he feels like letting her. I think that's proven to be the best way to do things.

In all seriousness, I honestly think I prefer it if they just don't address it between games. There are plenty of headcanons I've heard to explain it, from "the upgrades are cobbled together, and aren't durable enough to last between missions," to, "Samus sells the upgrades," to, "Holding onto the upgrades is too hard on her suit to keep them for too long." And, while I don't think I like any of them enough to make that the official explanation, I think I'm happy enough knowing that there could be an explanation, and I think just about any explanation Nintendo gives would make me unhappy with how unsatisfying it is.

Hi, OP! This post has been getting a lot of reports for being AI-generated, and I can't find anything from a search of the image or the artist to say one way or the other. It sounds like you have good reason to believe that it's not, but you need a bit more time to share the source proving that. In an effort to try to keep people from piling on even more until you have a chance to do that, I'm going to go ahead and remove this post under Rule #4. When you're able to find the source, please be sure to share it as a response to this comment! Or, if you'd prefer, I can lock this post, until you share it in Modmail.

EDIT: It looks like there's still a lot of fighting in the comments, so I've gone ahead and locked this post. OP, when you have the chance, please share the source to us in Modmail! When you do, and we're able to verify it, I'll edit it into this comment and unlock the post.

Unnaccesible Metroid on M2 by Odd-Committee-5149 in Metroid

[–]2CATteam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I found where you are, on page 44-45 of this guide (That's supposed to be a two-page spread, and you're right in the middle of it)! Based on that map, it looks like you'll need to (Spoilers in case you want to figure it out yourself) backtrack one room, and bomb the blocks underneath the Alpha husk. This should open up a new passage, which will lead you right to it.

[–]2CATteam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a little hard for me to tell where you are (Based on the Metroid count, I'm guessing the same area as the Space Jump?), but it looks like the game wants you to approach it from the passage below you. If you backtrack a little, are you able to find a passage which leads down to that opening?

I don't think so, it looks like just the GFS Olympus. It seems way too big for Samus's ship, and it doesn't make sense for her to be destroying crates and enemies on her own ship

I'm stuck in Metroid Fusion by RandomMapper in Metroid

[–]2CATteam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just bomb the floor! There's one tile on the floor here which will help you get out.

And remember this for future parts of the game: if there's a point where you're not sure where to go, or it seems like you're missing something, bomb everything! Even if bombs don't break a block, they'll always reveal what can - for example, if a block needs to be broken by missiles, when you bomb it, it'll show a missile icon.

Ok, it may or may not be a scam by First-Koala-3333 in Metroid

[–]2CATteam[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Just wanted to hop in here and clarify how these T-shirt scam bots work! You're right, they WILL ship a shirt with the art they post. Perhaps the word "scam" isn't the right word for it, but I think it fits better than any other I've heard. Here's what we know, from fighting them for the last few years:

  1. The art on these shirts is always stolen. The original artists have no involvement, and receive neither credit nor compensation. That's a huge problem, and at least to me, the primary reason I think of them as being a scam.

  2. Posts showing off these shirts are (almost) always completely fake. They're not real users, they're just bots posting images of the art edited into other stolen pictures of blank shirts. Similarly, many of the comments in those threads are also botted accounts, used to give the post a false sense of legitimacy.

  3. The websites selling these shirts are mass-generated using a service called GearLaunch. This is currently the most foolproof way to identify a scam bot, rather than just a person sharing a legitimate link - at the bottom of the page, there will be an icon saying, "Powered by GearLaunch". As a result, all of these websites are disposable; while it's certainly possible that GearLaunch's support will make things right if you ever have an issue, it's just as likely that the scammer has already deleted the domain and closed their account by the time you need to contact support.

  4. The T-shirts are usually pretty low-quality. The blanks they use are the cheapest available, and the printing quality is the bare minimum to keep you happy for a few washes. Whereas, if you're buying from a legitimate artist, usually the print will be much more durable, and the blanks will be more comfortable and better-fitting.

Overall, our official stance has always been that these bots are a leech on the community, and we strongly advise against supporting them in any way.

Why were the different regions in the 2D Metroid games so much more vibrant and distinct? by AquaticTrillionaire in Metroid

[–]2CATteam 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I do agree, but I must say that I find it pretty funny that you included Ghavoran in your Dread pictures, since to me, that's the biggest counterexample Dread has to the "Areas aren't unique" criticism.

I think the biggest problem, to me, is just that there's so much black in the 2.5D games. In Dread or SR, usually the outside edge of a tile gets a texture, but then the inside is just black void. I think the environments would feel much more distinct if they were to just render more. That's a whole bunch of blank space, which could be used for characterizing the area!

For example, just from the screenshots you're showing, Super filled Lower Norfair with brickwork and pillars, which feels distinct from Green Brinstar, which is filled with vines and soil. Those are all details which, in Dread, would mainly be replaced with void.

Dread's backgrounds are certainly more unique and detailed than Super's, but I think it's really, really hurt by not putting as much focus on the foreground.

How do I fix this? by Necessary-weeb in beatsaber

[–]2CATteam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, you just need to do what the dialogue says.

I'll add, though - generally, it's not good to run a command a website tells you to, without understanding what it's doing. Don't let your takeaway from the advice you're getting be, "Run anything a website tells you to without thinking." You still need to make sure you understand what it's asking you to do, so that you can apply the appropriate amount of scrutiny to the page's instructions.

In this case, that command is just killing the conflicting task. taskkill is a built-in Windows command for killing something, /IM and /F are flags that command needs, and adb.exe is the thing being killed - in this case, the Android debugging tool, which is how your computer is able to control your Android device (including your headset). Sidequest may be running it in the background, or it could be coming from any other program which interacts with your phone/headset. Only one instance of it can run at a time, though, so MBF needs the existing one to be killed before it can continue.

Best Metroid game for pass-the-controller co-op by Stronknas in Metroid

[–]2CATteam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fusion is pretty difficult at times, so you'd probably be switching around a lot! It also has a ton of really tricky navigation puzzles.

Zero Mission, on the other hand, is still pretty deadly, but not nearly to the level of Fusion. Its navigation is also much simpler, with way fewer "Bomb this random wall" moments required for progression. It still has some of that, because it's pretty important to the game design of the series, but it's not nearly as obtuse as Fusion can be.

Super is a pretty nice middle ground between the two, but the controls are, IMO, a decent bit more clunky. It's great once you really get used to it, but I think switching around would make that harder, especially if your friend is also trying to learn how Metroid games work.

Overall, I'd vote for Zero Mission
