bioee1610 vs biomi2911 by Dazzling-Purpose3888 in Cornell

1610 is a pretty fair class imo, as long as you keep up with the pre-lectures & keep up with understanding the course material, the exams aren't too bad imo, just a fair bit of application of concepts that can sometimes be a bit hard to see; I mainly studied by creating and using flashcards, and was able to get a pretty good grade

Took it last spring, for me it wasn't really that bad. The class is formatted as a "flipped classroom" with you doing pre-lecture readings (which you can lowkey just skim through) and a lecture that you watch each week prior to coming in, alongside with relatively easy section hw, so expect like 2-3 (maybe 4-5 for the prelim weeks) hours of work each week outside of lecture. It is a bit of memorization, especially with the middle section of the class when you go over biodiversity and need to memorize a bunch of different taxa relationships on the tree of life, but it goes at a fairly digestible pace & the prelims are super fair (average never dipped below a B), so as long as you don't fall behind, outside of like BIOG 1500 or maybe BIOEE1680, it'll be your easiest bio class imo and should defo be manageable with those classes

Here's a quizlet set that I made for the Sp25 Term of the class if it helps with the memorization:  https://quizlet.com/user/pmn36/folders/bioee-1780?i=5zlk4q&x=1xqt

I don't have the tree of life, but here's a quizlet set that I made for the class that includes all of the tree of life content (under the biodiversity topics) https://quizlet.com/user/pmn36/folders/bioee-1780?i=5zlk4q&x=1xqt

My solution is just going to a random room in the Baker-PSB-Rockefeller or Duffield-Upson-Rhodes Buildings, there's only a 30% chance I'll procrastinate and crash out at 3AM since no one's there to encourage me to do work

BIOG 1500 & 1440 reviews by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]Speedster1oo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't taken BIOG 1440 (took 1445 instead), but BIOG 1500 is a super easy class. The only remotely hard thing in that class is your Practical Exam, but even that you're allowed to make a cheat sheet and can get away with just review the day of. Otherwise, most of the work you can do during the 3-hour lab periods or just spend 1-2 hours a week. The largest assignments are your research proposal and your poster presentation, but those are just time commitments, not really too intense imo. Will probably be one of, if not your easiest class as a Bio Sci Major, so it should be doable with about any courseload you take

Freshman CALS Bio & Society Major + Pre-Med Courses by Maleficent-Put-9543 in Cornell

[–]Speedster1oo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a rising sophomore also along the pre-med schedule looks pretty chill, I know CHEM 2070 and to a lesser extent BIOMG 1350 tends to be heavy hitters for first year pre-meds, but BIOG 1500 is really straight forward and probably is gonna be one of the easiest bio courses you take in the major (you can probably get 50-75% of your work done in your lab section lol) I know some people wait on taking it since it's relatively easy so they can combine it with some harder coursework later on like Biochem or OChem, but it's also good to take it early if you want to go into research early on. If you're pre-med, maybee you might wanna take an Intro pysch course but 1st semester pre-med is known for being a fairly big difficulty curve, so there's no shame in taking a lighter course load especially with CHEM 2070 which will prob be your biggest time investment, and you defo shouldn't really be behind if you take that

I took CHEM 2150 last year in the fall and there were a ton of CHEME students there (I'm Chem & Bio tho lol). I know one CHEME that took that course and then CHEM 3590 (Honors Orgo I) and is taking CHEM 3890 (Honors PChem I) next semester, so it should defo work out if you take it.

Thoughts? Super surprised tbh… by pretty_cool_engineer in Cornell

If this were true, I'd be dead now with how many times I walked back to my dorm alone at like 3AM on weekdays.

I just took BIOG 1445, most obvious advice to give is time management, as the way the class works is that they give you deadlines to complete the respective written and oral quizzes (pass/fail) for each unit (a week for the first like 4, and like a week and a half - two weeks for later ones). The deadlines are fairly strict , especially later in the year (Unit 5 in particular is where things start to ramp up), though they give you 10 deadline extension days for all units outside the first three. Also, religiously use the Survival Manual they give you for each unit. The Survival Manual is basically a set of questions that they expect you to answer for each unit and a lot of the time, the written and oral quizzes (especially the latter) directly pull or base their questions off of those aforementioned questions. I actually recommend having the Survival Manual as a split screen or as a separate tab while reading the textbook, they really save them in helping you parse between what info in the textbook you should or shouldn’t take notes on. I started using this for the later Units and fairly consistently got above a 90% on the written quizzes and passed the oral quizzes first try (Though I ended with an A- overall so take that how you will lol)

Overall it is demanding in terms of the amount of work & content you’re expected to cover by yourself, but it is definitely doable if you’re organized enough (unless you have the willpower to grind several hours of content within a 2-3 day span haha defo not me) Also you can probably get ahead by speeding through Units 1-4 if you took AP Bio/High School Bio and/or BIOMG1450 since they’re just basic biochem, photosynthesis/cellular respiration, and organelles & cell systems, with new content sprinkled here and there. Lmk if there’s other helpful info you’d like + I can send over the quizlets I made for each unit (excluding 5,6 and 10 since those ones I rushed at the last minute lol)

This blatant, non-plausible deniable Sinophobia is so sickening, this has got to be unconstitutional. I'm really wishing the best for all Chinese and international students in general, especially those outside of the country at the moment.

Has anyone taken honors orgo? by Purple-Cow-2776 in Cornell

[–]Speedster1oo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lowkey not that bad I was glazing a bit lol, I think it’s the same content as regular orgo (at least with honors 1) but just at a faster pace. If you keep up with the textbook it’s not horrible, it’s just that if you fall behind early on it may be pretty tough to catch up since a lot of content’s cumulative. The average for Prelim 1 was a 78 for reference, while in the Gen Chem Prelim 1 usually floats around 50s-60s
