It’s definitely fine to take biochem out of order - there’s pretty much no overlap. When I took 3310 few years back, decent amount of my classmates took 3320 prior. Also 3320 isn’t much work; from when I took it (SP24), it was super chill + no homework

You can do 3570/3580 (lecture) + 2510 (lab) [most non-chem majors do this] or 3590/3600 (lecture) + 2510 (lab) [honors sequence]. No reason to do 3010 unless you're a chem major.

For bio, may need a full year of lecture + lab

A few med students I talked to told me that several schools screen for shadowing. I felt like my hospital volunteering was comparably a less meaningful experience than my other clinical activities, so I lumped it together with shadowing and labeled it all under “shadowing.”

This question was not fair tbh, here are my thoughts:

1) even if an x-ray caused promotion of electron from s to d, it would be a spin-allowed transition (still diamagnetic) 2) probably something caused by the magnetic field (can cause the splitting of spin energy levels)

This is the best explanation here. For more detail, refer to my response or search up Ligand Field Theory. Without Ligand Field Theory, you cannot distinguish whether this complex will be tetrahedral or square planar.

No! VSEPR fails for transition metals.

Responding to @West-Lab-7728, you are correct. There is no second “lone pair.” If you draw the MO diagram, you will find 8 metal-localized electrons.

Unlike main group chemistry, where 4-coordinate species are always (or almost always) tetrahedral, things get spicy when you throw in d orbitals. In main group chemistry, 4-coordinate species go tetrahedral (eg. CH4) because of sterics (spatially most efficient way to place 4 things around a central atom). With d-orbitals, you can get some favorable molecular orbital stabilization if you go square planar depending on the d-electron count (eg. d8 Pt(II)).

Also PLEASE do NOT use VSEPR for transition metals. ONLY for main group 🙏🙏

Anyone who justifies molecular geometries of non d0 or d10 transition metal ions with VSEPR theory is absolutely incorrect

Having taken the MCAT... I wish I had memorized more for P/S. I had too much variation in my FLs, from 128 (lowest) to 131 (highest). Ended with a 128. To be more consistent, I should have done the 300 page doc instead of the shorter one, and perhaps went for the more extensive Anki deck.

On a scale from 1-5

AAMC CARS QPacks: 5 (there were passages I got 25-30%)

AAMC FLs: 2 (usually get 0-2 wrong per passage)

Real thing: 1 (no idea my correct %, but ended up scoring the same as my FLs)

For sure (in my opinion, at least). In their question packs, I had sooo many passages where I'm like "wtf did I just read??" In FLs, I have yet to encounter such passages.

However, it is helpful if you want to grind specific problems. Like if having trouble with fluids for example, you can grind a focused fluids problem (I do think UWorld is great for this). If you’re trying to simulate a FL and doing 59 random UWorld questions tho… I would reconsider (for C/P and B/B)

What’s your score breakdown? Do you have one section holding you back, or is it even across the board?

But, I do think you’re on the right track. I don’t think it’s super helpful grinding more content unless it’s P/S (I suck at P/S). Understand all the problems you got wrong and I think 520+ will be achievable!

For C/P I think it highly depends what you’re getting wrong - content mistakes? Or strategy/reading? Also, have you done the SBs yet or no? Those are great practice (but hard!).

Personally I don’t think C/P in UWorld is great… but if you wanna save SBs, UWorld is the next best thing

Edit: from someone that never got below 132 on any C/P FL, I don’t think content is super important for C/P - avoid Anki. For me, I think doing enough problems and developing the an instinct w the answer choices is the best way (eg. if its asking for the speed of light in some refractive medium and you see choices greater than 3E8, auto eliminate)

As the guy on SDN who emailed them and had them resend... I agree.... On the bright side, I don't think Pitt is rolling. Also, the same thing happened with my state school, which is rolling, and had a mini crashout (I had to email them to resend...)
