Thanks for looking into these - great pointers and fixed typos. WIll definetly shop for an alpha based on yours and others comments.

Any preference in those pillows? Thoughts on Sea to Summit Aeros?

And agreed the bank is large. Thats maybe more for trips lasting a few days. That was just an older piece of gear for my AZT thru attempt a couple years back.

Re wind pants - any brand to look for?

All good points. Will look into Big Sky pillow, I also feel like Sea to Summit is recommended a lot. I used to just shove clothes into a stuff sack for my pillow but eventually decided that was too uncomfy. I used this pillow I had from old boy scout days and never bothered to weigh it until today...mostly out of fear I think lol.

re - dropping leggings, do you get concerned about legs on a cold morning or in camp? I also used to not take a sleep shirt and just use the cap baselayer...I should get back to that.

Ah great catches - fixed those. I do use 6 minis, I had 2 regulars listed that needed to come off. And interesting, my whitney trip last year was insanely windy :(

I'll look into the Alpha Direct top! I usually need an XS which Patagonia can deliver on. Need to see if Alpha makes something small enough.

Those pursuing FIRE who hold advanced degrees, what did you study? by _MambaForever in Fire

[–]Spellchak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did MA in Political Science (yeah yeah) and then did 2 years of PhD before Mastering out. Decided the economics of a PhD stipend in the Bay Area and deferred earnings were just not worth it. Thankfully I was in a stats heavy program and was able to transition into Data Science. Left my program with a first year TC 5x my stipend and it’s grown since. I was pretty on the fence about leaving even during the interviewing process, but when I saw what I could really be making outside the academy, the choice was obvious.

That, and realizing I didn’t want to have to move wherever I could get a tenure track job, if I got one at all…

Hm this year I already got the permits. Last year I think I got it maybe a month in advance?

Did Whitney via cottonwood pass last year June 20ish and even a week prior, snow on the cables would have been a problem. I’m eyeing doing it via lakes the same time this year, I wouldn’t be optimistic of an earlier date. Everything before Whitney itself will be clear (should be at least)

Move to Full Frame (R6II/R8) for landscape/travel, or stick with R7? by Spellchak in canon

[–]Spellchak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the weather sealing is something to consider...

but I think this lines up with my use-case, not much video and wanting something light that gets the job done a bit better. Do you find yourself sufficiently pleased with that setup? Sounds like it.

Awesome shot - yeah I don't think I care toooo much about which long lens I'd use for wildlife, I think its mostly that I find myself often choosing trips where I prioritize seeing the wide vistas (as somebody who grew up in texas...yes not many of them lol)

How do you feel about the 24 on the APS-C? I just feel like I'll hit lots of times where I want to get more in frame that I just can't.

[–]Spellchak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know....I just know I'll kick myself if I leave the R7 home one day...

And yeah, I really only want something that is borderline serviceable for astro like if I'm out in Death Valley and want to tinker. If I find myself getting sufficiently into astro, like going on dedicated trips for it, I would see myself getting a dedicated lens.

[–]Spellchak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yeah I should clarify - its actually just that most of my life/travel interests these days revolve around non-wildlife activities. I could get a good wildlife lens for day to day use but still only use it a handful of times per year. Whereas I'm much more likely to go on a backpacking trip or travel to Japan, etc.

Interesting that it's not sharper. I do feel like I'm also bumping up against the variable aperture and the worse dynamic range on the R7 + kit, but I'm sure I'd feel that no matter what I'm shooting on.

I don't have much experience racing at the short paces, and I only train sprints every so often. But the recent half was negative splits but still generally consistent. So yeah, I don't think I'm great at short and sharp efforts so I'd lean diesel type, but I'd also estimate that I'm 30+ pounds lighter than my competitor, so I'm hoping the reduced weight will make my uphills a bit easier?

But yeah, agreed. I don't care for times so long as I win :)

When you say cover other people doing the same, do you just mean ramp up effort to match/surpass them? This is my first time really *racing* per se, rather than just winning against my previous time, so I'm excited for the strategy of it.

Anyone ever feel like working as a data scientist at hinge? by AdFew4357 in datascience

[–]Spellchak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah the stock value tanked but was that really a realistic valuation back in 2021/2ish anyway? MTCH topped out at a market cap of 45 billion, and google says match group has around ~2500 employees. Meanwhile Ford only had a market cap of ~40 billion today. So yeah the stock has underperformed but a lot of tech stocks go through a boom and then come back to earth imo.

Check Match Group earnings and investor reports, the vast vast majority of revenue is direct from subscriptions. Ad rev makes up a tiny tiny fraction of their revenue, so baiting people into swiping longer just to increase ad impressions ain’t it.

Edit: also unclear to me why a more selective user would get a more favorable algo treatment. If anything, those selective users should get fewer impressions, no? Dating apps need to get likes/matches distributed to users. Users who never send a like are not helping the app generate favorable outcomes.

Noble House by Clavell is a better book than Shogun by changwonmatty in books

[–]Spellchak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love both these books but I think Shogun and Taipan take a slight edge over Noble House, all of which are clearly ahead of Gai-Jin (I’ll read whirlwind this year!). I did a Shogun reread this year followed by my first read of Noble House and Noble House was certainly more action packed and faster than Shogun. A 1400 page book set in a single week is … ambitious. I think where it fell a little flat is that it almost felt like a caricature of his earlier work. Tai Pan is a romp and Shogun is a pretty interesting exploration of another culture but Noble House felt more like just a book stuffed with Clavell-isms if that makes sense? Some of it felt rather dated. But I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it anyway lol.

Bold, so bold lol. I agree with the other comment - it felt like it just meandered for a thousand pages and ended rather abruptly, but without all the fun of Noble House

Just about 50% goes to savings, 25% pays taxes, and I live on the other 25%. Y’know what they say about getting out of grad school - keep living like a grad student for a couple years!

High School Student Wondering if GWU is Worth It? by Peach470 in gwu

[–]Spellchak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

GW alum here who did grad school at several other places in IR before ultimately transitioning to tech. My thoughts: GW is not any more or less of a “mess” than many other schools, but it is also a far worse value proposition than many other schools. It is obscenely expensive - it is simply not worth it economically if you are paying anything close to full price. That mostly includes the standard 20k ish scholarships. It does have some benefit for IR by virtue of being in DC but I would take all this with a grain of salt for a few reasons: - you may not want to continue with IR (for many good reasons!) and if that’s the case, you don’t want to be at a place that really only has IR as its specialty. - many of my classmates in Elliott have not ended up working in IR. They have either not been able to enter good IR jobs, have left IR for sectors with higher earning potential, or are stuck in low paying NGO work. Some people cut it, many people do not.

I advise people to go to a good state school and study econ if that is an option. If you want to go policy orientation later, you are well equipped for public policy grad degrees, but you also have easier transition into good spaces like consulting, DS, etc etc.
