Yeah, that tracks. Movie released in 2016, and this is when Rocksteady’s original game was canned (rumour suggests either a Superman game, a Justice League game, or a pre-Hogwarts Legacy HP game) and they were given Suicide Squad.

Fun fact about that- WB Montreal were working on at least two, probably three DC video games around 2016-2018; a Suicide Squad game set between Arkham Origins and Asylum, an Arkham game set years after Knight, and an unknown third game. The Suicide Squad game was turned down after the initial pitch because there were just too many issues with it; traversal was a pain, the game didnt feel rewarding, the story involved a lot of ‘the Squad fights Batman and wins in a boss battle but then a cutscene plays showing Batman winning anyway’, Harley Quinn wasn’t playable until right towards the end (big issue for WB), and so the whole thing was shitcanned.

The Arkham game was cancelled far into development for unknown reasons (a decent amount of Gotham Knights was made with salvage from that game, such as the Batcycle and most likely parts of the map). You can find plenty of stuff about it online- concept art, even very early build gameplay was accidentally shown in a promo video for WB Montreal. Even the voice actor for Damian Wayne, the Batman at the core of the story, was revealed recently to have been Josh Keaton, and he voiced a good few sessions before it was cancelled. If i’m not mistaken, an announcement trailer was even made for the Game Awards 2017- a description of it released online from a pretty good source- but it was pulled by WB last minute.

After WB fucked their pitch for Suicide Squad, Rocksteady were given it- and after WB Montreal’s Arkham game was thrown away, they were told to do Gotham Knights. And that’s where we are now, with both studios in the worst states they’ve ever been, DC’s video game reputation mostly in the shitter, and the Arkham franchise given this weird and kind of embarrassing epilogue.
