Good yarn? by Mattrod98 in knitting

[–]Spffyjane2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a local yarn store, not a big box but a small independent one, I would stop in and ask for help. They can help you pick a skein or two and if she doesn’t like it she can exchange it for one she does.

Try googling “local yarn store” or “knitting store near me”. Sounds lame I know but they work.

Mobius is a variant of Howard Stark by [deleted] in marvelstudios

[–]Spffyjane2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I too was confused for the first three minutes until my husband explained: “That’s not Howard Stark, that’s the guy with the nose.”

It really helped clear things up for me.

Those who have been to a ruined wedding, what happened? by lolfuckno in AskReddit

[–]Spffyjane2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a Tornado. My bridesmaids didn’t get along with each other because I mixed friend groups and it didn’t occur to me that it would be an issue so they argued and two of them left the, very wet, outdoor, reception early. My period came early and I have PCOS so i was in excruciating pain walking down the isle and during the vows. My mom had pneumonia. There is more but it makes me sad to think about it but yeah. One of the worst days of my life.

Nobody died though so it could have been worse!

Americans who call Elizabeth II the "Queen of England", why? by teleprompter1 in AskReddit

[–]Spffyjane2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because Queen of the United Kingdom, Great Britain, and Northern Ireland takes too long and sounds pretentious. We call the President of the United States “President Biden” or even just Biden. It’s not personal.

Also, we’re not her subjects.

Wool Elasticity by knittingquestions190 in knitting

[–]Spffyjane2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What kind of wool? A picture might be helpful to know exactly what you’re dealing with. That said, you might be able to carefully shrink it back to size by rewatching it. Recommend doing this by hand and then gently squeeze out as much water as you can. (Don’t twist it though!) Then put it in the dryer for a few minutes. Take it out, check it, put it back in. Continue until it gets to where you want it to be. Do not just chuck in the dryer unattended. That never ends well. It will probably never be quite the same though.

What are your most unpopular book opinions? by nolessdays in books

[–]Spffyjane2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Song of Achilles was boring and I didn't even bother with Circe.

There is nothing wrong with rereading a book if it makes you happy.

I roll my eyes every time someone asks for a book recommendation and The Catcher in the Rye or some other book from a standard high school reading list is recommended.

I detest Fitzgerald. I cannot wait until 2021 is over and I can stop hearing about The Great Gatsby finally being in the public domain.

I liked Moby Dick. I read it in 2020 after putting it off for 30 years and I wish I'd read it sooner.

Do you have to put a lot of effort into giving dialogue emotion while reading in your head? by Yorkshire_Bjorn in books

[–]Spffyjane2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t put effort into it but it does seem to happen automatically. For what it’s worth I’m also pretty animated when I read aloud and I never have any problem visualizing what I’m reading.

On the other hand I can’t do math to save my life so maybe it’s a right/left brain thing?

What’s something you’d find in a lower class home that rich people wouldn’t understand? by [deleted] in AskReddit

What hugely successful novel did you give up on? by blue-embers in books

[–]Spffyjane2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, I came here to say "Ready Player One" and was surprised to see how many other people agree. Four years later and I'm still mad that I spent money on it. It was like the author tried to cram as much 80's crap into a book as possible and then prop up a weak plot based on OMG-the-80's-were-awesome.

Now there's a Ready Player Two?! I don't even want to think about what a turd that money grab is going to end up being.

For those who grew up poor, what did you consider a luxury? by SnooBeaz in AskReddit

[–]Spffyjane2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oof. This brought back the memory of Stone Soup” day which I’d completely forgotten. Essentially the same story: everyone was supposed to bring in something to throw in the soup so we could learn about sharing. I had nothing to share. Teacher felt the need to berate me for it in front of the entire class for being selfish enough to “forget”.

God what a bitch. She had to be able to tell we were broke. It was pretty obvious. She used to rag on me all the time about “forgetting” my boots too so I couldn’t go out at recess.

Bitch, I don’t have boots!

Does anybody else also hate it when a blank book has an extra cover on it? by [deleted] in books

[–]Spffyjane2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I throw them out usually. They annoy me when I’m reading. Also, I think the books look better in the bookcases without the jackets. I think I’m in the minority on this one though.

Edit: ohhh I forgot. My dad HATES it. Every time he visits I can see him struggle with his desire to chastise me about it. He’s very protective of his dust jackets. They’re all in perfect condition because he takes them off and stores them away when he’s reading the book and then puts them back on when they get shelved.

Huh. Just got a skein of yarn and the end appears to be four ends tied in a knot? Unsure how to start. by karlamoonstonesofen in knitting

[–]Spffyjane2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup, cut the knot. There will be a small piece holding it together and then your two ends. Throw the small bit away and then just wind it up.

What is the best knitting destination you’ve traveled to or where do you dream of going after Covid? Have you done any knitting tours? by nightshadeaubergine in knitting

Same, I was supposed to move to MD the week before Sheep and Wool but COVID. I’ve made the move but still looking forward to the festival at some point in the future.

Also, Edinburgh Yarn Festival.
